ideler wheel upgrade

Post by tanktop »

hi guys i have looking at fixing ideler wheels on my tiger for some time and after some time this is what i came up with.
i decided to fit bearings to the ideler wheels and i found bearings on e bay that seems to do the job they were 4mm id x 10mm od x 4mm width, they have dust covers fitted and £1.70 each. bargin .

now its time to modify the wheels, the id of the ideler is 9.84mm,the centre of the wheel needs to be drilled out to a depth of 5.2mm this is measured from the top edge . i used a drlling jig a pice of wood with a hole so the ideler is a snug fit to aid drilling

i found a cordless drill seemed to work well, drill the centre in stages measuring with a digital caliper to insure correct depth.

the ID of the idler was 9.84 mm i needed to make this closer to 10mm to fit the bearing , i used the cordless drill with a small sanding drum to remove material checking the size the digital caliper and test fitting bearing, when the bearing is almost seated with 2 mm above surface, place idler in a vice with 2pieces of wood and press bearing gently untill level with the surface.
making a new axle, i used a m4 x50 caphead and ground the head , and cut to 20m long .

i finely added an m4x 0.5 nylon washer to prevent wear.

the total cost 2 bearings £3.40 +nyllon washers £1.30 =£4.70.
i hope you like this mod Chris

This is a brilliant idea o have copied this on my tank and I used two bearings on each wheel I used hub bearings from a kyosho optima! Work fine you still have to grind the inside to fit them !
I love the smell of napalm in the morning!
