I don't doubt you Hermann as to there purpose but I always believed , wrongly now , they were for controlling recoil.

Yes Hermans correct....I think the tubes were fitted as shock absorbers to lessen the strain on the elevation gear due to the extra "bounce" created by the longer barrel...they were fitted to the prototype before the extra mantlet armour was added...
