Tankestein IBU 2 Gone Wild

Post by TheSynchronizer »

After much hardship I managed to link up my Monstertronic with my brand new IBU 2, first things first, I've never owned an IBU until this one, but can someone confirm this, should there be a delay in between inputing an action say (turret traverse left) and the turret actually turning?? there's a 1-2 second delay in between the action and the motion of the tank.

Now onto the actual problem. Although wonky, and very funky i'm still trying to figure out my controls. The turret works fine, when i finally figured out how to turn on the motor that's when things got interesting. The tracks starts spinning in all sorts of diffrent directions at once, with no input from my radio! It's almost like the tank is trying to invert itself and transform into a helicopter by rotating it self in neutral steer but then changing it's mind half way into neutral, trying to go forward, then wanting to go into reverse then back into stuttering autistic mode. Once again, no input from my end. Once I turn off the engine it all stops, after the 3 second input delay (that can't be right). I've double checked the wiring, everything matches up. I think 8O not entirely sure what to do.

As it is, channel 1 and 2 are on the right, and 3/4 on the left, when i change up the settings and say have 1/3 on the left, one track decides to spin on it's own, and the right track seems to act like a normal tank. Everything just seems inverted and not right i'm not even sure where to begin to assess the problem. I'll upload pictures of my wiring along with video of the antics as well tommorow.

I had that issue with the radio Ian supplied to me before as well as the 9XR Pro. It's a calibration issue mainly, and possibly also one of the values in the config file in the IBU's SD card. Calibration - and possibly editing the config file - should sort it all up.

I think there's three problems here, my remote thinks it's sending airplane signals to the tank so it's constantly running the motors when I turn them on. I think I'll have to recalibrate the controls once more. For the config file what should I edit?

From my experience, calibrate things first. If you got the controls working (i.e., each pot and stick corresponds to specific function), but still messed up (e.g., turning left makes it go right, pushing stick makes it go reverse instead of backwards), then that's the time to go into the config file.

I've found calibration to be the key to fix the issues. My RC tank with IBU2 Pro and 9XR Pro, when turned on, used to just run immediately without stick input, won't respond to any stick input, and audio controls were everywhere. Scalawag told me which controls to use for calibration, and using that and following the instructions, I finally got the RC tank working, except it did opposite to the stick commands I gave it. That's when I went to the config file to reverse the settings therein and now it runs normally.

Tankbear ought to be of better help than I am though, as I am not familiar with your radio transmitter, and he's the to-go guy for IBU2 config/calibration issues.

If you could put in a word for me to look over this topic that'd be of great help. As it currently is, my ibu is behaving the same way as yours is, guess i'll have to see what's up in regards to the calibration issue. I've had the owner of rctank.de give me a helping hand and pretty indepth instructions, we both seem to agree that it's my remote control, perhaps it thinks my tank is an airplane so it runs the motors all the time as if it was gonna take off. he told me to set all the values for trim/gas/etc to 0 and see if that changes anything. I'll give that a try soon and see if it does change anything. If not, to the config files it is~

First thing is confirm your radio is outputting non mixed signals.

Best way is to connect servos to the 1-4 channels of your receiver plus a 6v battery to power the receiver. Then move each stick separately and make sure only 1 servo moves at a time. If more than 1 moves with 1 stick direction then your radio is mixing the channels and you’ll need to figure how to turn it off. I don’t have a clue on the monsteronic radios, but should be in the instructions.

Then connect the servo leads like this

IBU1 to RX2
IBU2 to RX 1
IBU3 to RX3
4-4
5-5
6-6

Turn dipswitch #6 to OFF

Turn tank and radio on and wait for the receiver to bind to radio (normally a solid LED)

Turn dip switch #8 ON

Move sticks in all directions, also do the same for channel 5 & 6 controls (normally switch or knob)

Turn dip switch #8 OFF

Turn tank and radio off and wait a few seconds.

Turn radio and tank on and wait until the receiver is bound to the radio, you should also hear a small portion of elevation sound to verify the microSD card is been read okay.

Now go through the sticks to make sure each stick controls the correct function. I do in this format

Main gun
Machine gun
Traverse
Start engine (your is 5 channel mode at moment because dip switch #6 is OFF) so hold left stick diagonally down right (sometimes it’s left depending on the traverse reverse channel)
Forward/backwards (note if iniertia is on it takes a second to move so hold stick rather than quick flick)
Steering

When you’ve them 4 channels sorted, try channel 5 which is normally a switch and you should get 2 sound effects

When your happy that works turn dip switch #6 ON (your now in 6 channel mode)

Channel 5 now becomes your engine start/stop. The diagonal stick wont work now

Move to channel 6 which is normally a knob and twist it you should get 3 sound effects.

Now your configured.

On the dip switch 6, my IBU is the base version but my handset is a 6 channel, should I still do that part of the process

Leave dipswitch #6 off if you've a IBU2 Base

Okay so I've pretty much narrowed down my issues. The trim settings and Subtrim along with the servo end position and the dual rate/exp seem to be the reason why my tank runs on its own with the engine on. I fine tuned it to the point where the tracks stutter in place, and it runs somewhat smooth, however it's still annoyingly prevalent. I'm gonna buy a 4 channel uncomputarized hand set from our local traxxas shop and see if I have any better results
