I'm glad someone else is doing the 505th. Are you adding barbed wire? I used garden wire for the main wire and little twist ties for the barbs. It took feckin ages! :O

I'm sad to say i'm not doing a 505th tank now. I did some reading and discovered Kurt Knispel and what i read freaked me out so much, it seemed it was meant to be. He was born on the same day as me and he died on the same date that i bought my tank! Creepy! He also sounded like a pretty decent guy. Bit of a kelly's heroes "oddball"

I did a 3 tone cammo version of his early model 101 tiger. Granted, the photo clearly shows a plain, un-camouflaged tank, but i like the pattern so much, I went with it, and who knows, he may have painted his tank some time after the photo???

I'll post pics soon. I will be making barbed wire and adding equipment like fuel drums etc when i get time. Thanks again everyone for all the advice and help, it's much appreciated.

Reviving an old thread.....

I need a bit more help if anyone out there knows a thing or two about German tank regiments.

My Tiger is all painted up and weathered but I've yet to do unit markings.

I'm doing Kurt Knispel's tiger number 101 and the numbers are already painted on. What I need now are smaller markings. Knispel was in the 503rd, so I believe the tank should have a tigers head on the front right panel. Is this right?

Also I don't know anything about division markings, like the little double "TT" or triple "TTT" kind of symbols on the left front panels. Does anyone know what they should be?

I know that he was part of the 500th panzer battalion which later became the 1st company of the 503rd at kursk, this is the period I'm interested in, as if I understand it correctly tank 101 would of been part of a 1st company, as signified by it's first number.

Can anyone help me out here, my eyeballs are getting dry from all the net searching! Thanks

I finally got my camera repaired, so pictures will follow soon.

Eastern Front wrote:The tiger head is of course the units insignia, some tanks had it on the hull, others didn't. Without having a pic of the tank your modelling,,,its anyones guess..
Some of the battalions ensured that all the tanks had them, but in areas where they fought hard that soon went by the wayside and only hull numbers remained..
I remember reading about the "TT" etc, but for the life of me I cannot remember,,,will look it up when I get home..
Your hull number 101 is from the first company, first tank.

Cheers!
Thanks for the help. I was pretty sure it was a tigers head. I know that some 503rd had a full tiger creeping, but that was later in the war I believe. My tiger would have existed in early 43, so I would imagine they were still fairly organised on their unit markings at that stage.

The most common spot I've seen for the tigers head, is the front right (facing the tank) so I will paint it there.

Thanks again for your help

Thanks. Great link. A lot to look at there. It doesn't matter how hard you search, you always miss something good. I'm glad you found it though.

I meant to write inverted T, but just noticed my mistake, DOH! You don't happen to know if all tanks at kursk had the T markings? or were they exclusive to the 503rd? It seems every picture I find that says it's from kursk, has a different symbol. I'm assuming this is mostly because the pictures are from elsewhere and wrongly thought to be kursk.

Thanks again

The 503rd was no longer painting on the tiger head marking by Kursk.
The only Pics I have seen of 503rd tigers with that marking were still painted gray.
Check this 503rd gallery on TIF:

The only tank in all the pics that appears to be wearing the tiger head insignia is 241.

Great looking tank btw. I was sure I had already commented on it, but I just noticed I hadn't, sorry. I love the subtle camo scheme and damage sections, really nice model.
