running in gears

Guys read somewhere that gears need to be run in......

I have a set of Waltersons gears ready to fit into my Asiatam Tiger1 hull, fitting them shouldn't be a problem. Now, how do I run them in please......

The brass ones I just run directly off a battery on work bench before installing I would say an hour in each direction but you battery probably won't last so a full change battery each way.

I wouldn't use any cutting paste on brass as already soft.

be careful running in the Waltersons gears, they fit together well and most of the time need to be checked for box squareness and alignement only. Once they are alligned they run together with just some grease on them and really don't need to be broken in at all.
In my experience all you have to do most of the time is loosen the 3 screws that hold the box together and move the outer plate up or down a bit to get max alignment on the gears, once they all move freely retighten the screws and grease the gears, run them at slow speed for about 1 minute in each direction just to spread the grease around between the teeth.( some grease will fly off as well )
Then your ready to put them in your tank and use them. The tolerance between these gears is good and the teeth are cut nice and straight so there should be minimal issue.
I do the above before I ship all my boxes, If that doesn't work then I do something else which I won't post because not everyone should be tearing these boxes down and reassembling them.

Just a heads up, I just tried to fix the Waltersons gearboxes to my Asiatam gearbox plate. They don't fit, there are no alignment holes for those gearboxes. Wish I would have known that before I ordered them. The Walterson plate also doesn't work without some mods, strickly the junk HL Hull. I'll figure something out. Maybe someone on here has done it before and can chime in. Later dude.

Workin on a plate for the Asiatam/Taigen, there has been one guy that did mod things and they ended working well. You have 3 options, pm me and i'll send pics of the mod or I'll take the boxes back. you can also wait and you will get the sample production plate I am having machined. A bud of mine owns a machine shop and he is going to drill them out when he is not busy.

The difference between the two plates is small but in steel small can be miles.

Thanks guys, very kind. I have the boxes fitted, having said that it wasn't easy and they are only secured by 2 screws aside. Not ideal, but they are alined and holding securely for now. I suppose we have to adapt and overcome when fitting quality components, but hey that's part of the fun of our hobby.....ain't it.

The shaft protrusion is important, you have to match it with the new set up.

Cut the plate down the middle so you can spread it enough to get the shaft protrusion needed with the Waltersons

Get the protrusion you need with the Waltersons.

The grey plate is a piece of steel used to hold things down.

I used 3mm hex head cap screws.

The cap screws for the gearbox mounts are colour coded, the red one is cut short so it doesn't impact on the frame rail under the plate in the Taigen.

Thanks for the reply on this topic. Hopefully I will not have to go this far with modifying the plate. Freakydude has an individual who making up new plates to work with the Asiatam/Taigen hulls and Walterson gearboxes. Thanks again buddy...
