It doesn't help that I ordered all this stuff right before the hollidays either. As per the old RX18 Michael - Yes, somehow the right side drive got shorted out. All the rear drive sprocket does is spin when you power up the tank. Also plugged the left side into right side and same thing, it just spins. So something has gotten shorted out on the right drive side of the RX18. Looked hard to find solder over-runs, or an obvious short, but no luck....

Ian - What is your take on the Taigen 2.4Ghz system? As far as I can tell from the other threads is that there is no machingun or cannon sound buttons like on the Henglong controller, And, there is no sound on the BB gun unless the switch is on. Other than that, it's pretty much the same I would assume?? Just thinking out loud. Amazon here sells it for around 99 dollars. Is that system more hobby grade or is it on par with the Henglong controller? Just wondering...Thanks -

Ive not seen a taigen controller in action so hard to give opinion. From what ive read it is same or slightly better than the HL but with 2.4ghz radio. It still has all the same issues as the HL I.e. track recoil, sounds, etc. Personnelly I would say better options available which add features or make tank better.

As for no machine gun button etc that seems to be the way of hobby grade radios everything is controlled via a 4 channel radio. Normally have to hold one of the sticks in a certain location I.e. half down or bottom right on the left stick. It is possible to rewire the controller and add a push button to duplicate that stick position but to be honest you soon get use to using the stick for all the functions.

Thing is all my Futaba radios are set up for Helicopters. That means they don't have a self-centering left stick. It's used to control the collective, up & down of the heli. The two radios I have are the 9C SUPER and the T6 EXHP. Both Futaba. Don't know if I can set the left stick on either to self center??

I just converted all my tanks from RX-18 to Taigen 2.4 GHz. There are cheaper packages out there. I think there is a US eBay dealer selling the Radio, the MFU and an upgraded speaker (3.0ohm I believe) all for $75 + Shipping (should be cheap shipping for you. It was $20 for me to Canada). The main differences are as follow:

- 2.4Ghz receiver built-in to the MFU, as well as a non-removabale fan.
- The radio is a little better quality but nothing like Futaba or hobby grade sets.
- All existing RX-18 connections will plug into it directly, and there is an option for a reverse light (i.e. I converted my rear light on my Pershing to actually a reverse light)
- I can't comment on the BB function, but the IR functions are exactly the same as RX-18 except that it will only battle other Taigens (Not RX-18s) but BB should be the same
- The radio has a toggle for machine gun and a self center stick, with one trim control for L/R only. No K button from the old HL controller carryover though.
- Even though I don't believe it is new sound effect, I personally felt that it is better quality sound, even with the old HL speaker. Machine gun sound is definitely different. Better.
- Overall response I believe is better than RX-18, especially with lower speed.


As Ian says, it is really just a 2.4Ghz version of the RX-18 with some very minor changes.

You don't actually need the self leveler, if you set it up like a HL with all the drive controls on the right stick you get use to returning the left stick manually, it's just a case of getting used to it.

I've 3 hobby grade radios and only one has a self leveler and I don't have any issues like I say you just get use to it.

And if your really struggling you could get a hobby radio with a self leveler.

I don't mind not having the self level left stick. I'm wondering if any of my two Futaba radios are Clark board compatible? I have the 9C SUPER, and the T6EXHP. I have extra recievers for both, so not having to buy a new radio would be a plus!!

Well the Clark website list some Futaba radios which work but doesn't mention your model so not certain. Suppose could email them and ask if their know. Might even let you return it for a refund if it doesn't work.
