Another option (tested this afternoon) is baby oil, though I found the smoke volume to be quite low. However I then added a 50:50 mix with white spirit and lo and behold better smoke than the supplied heng long smoke oil!

The outboard motor oil is a valuable idea.

I'm not sure if the one pictured is thre special oil made to be added in the gasoline for 2 stroke engines, but that's the stuff I'm going to try. And I think the better bet is the oil made for being used in 2 stroke chainsaws (not the chain oil, the one made for mixing with the fuel).

I gave Semmy's idea a go and it works pretty well. The smoke is a bit thicker than with the ordinary fog fluid, at the very least this is a far more cost effective alternative to the standard (for me 42p per 100ml compared with about £3 for 35ml from HL). I used Johnsons Baby oil and white spirit from Wilkinsons, not sure if other brands are different?

Many years ago i remember my brother using a couple of turns of Nichrome wire around a short length of paraffin heater wick soaked in WD40 as a smoker on a gauge 1 electric loco. Im reasonably sure he used no more that 5 volts through the Nichrome
I use WD40 on some aloys to stop the swarf gumming the cutting tip when im machining it, the smoke is thick and white without wnting much heat from the tool or work piece.
WD can be had in 5 Litre cans for less than £20 a go.

So would it be feasible to try this oil in the standard HL set up on the tiger?

I have a new tank and the smoke unit works but the smoke is rather puny.

A lot of good info in the quest for black smoke. A caution though - many "petroleum distillates"will eventually damage paint and even plastics. Oil based stuff does work great, but it does eventually get messy and really hard to clean off model surfaces without damage.

Glycol/water based smoke fluids can get messy too, but wipe up witha damp cloth and I haven't had any damage from them. The problem of getting tube blockage from condensate can be avoided by using a bit bigger diameter tubes, but also try running a piece of string (not thread, something heavier) inside the tube and into the smoker. The condensate wets the string and doesn't "clump up" and flows back into the smoker. But it still is white smoke.....
