If you do a bit of googling and or reading, you see crews in the standard issue Tank helmet with the flappy ears. Also see them with steel lids on too. I reckon, only an informed guess that once they got into the field for real they would be quite keen on having the steel helmet on, specially the chap what had to poke his head out the top. That said, not sure what they would of worn to communicate....see I completely failed to answer your question there

. I reckon either or would suit. Maybe steel lid for the commander and tank helmets for the gunner and loader ?

see in this picture theres a mixture. Maybe the radio operator/loader has the tank helmet on as he has to listen into the radio obviously
