new to this forum

Post by goodhunting »

Ladies and gentlemen

I am new to this forum but not new to both modelling and RC world.
As a teenager and all through my 20's I did a lot of tank modelling in 1:35 scale, with special emphasis on German WW II armour. I really like the Pz IV as it was the workhorse of German military might.

As for RC... again I started young, but left the hobby for a long time. I picked it up again in 2011 and got into RC helicopters. Been building scale RC helicopters and enjoy flying them ever since.

Jr and I got a heng long 1:16 Tiger I early a long time ago. It still has 72 Mhz remote control system..
Anyway Jr will be leaving for college this year and I thought about modifying the Tiger I to a bit more contemporary equipment. I fly my helicopters with Jeti control system and thought about the possibility to use it in the tank world as well.

looking forward to exploring all the options.

Welcome, Klem: your experience with both modeling and RC will be great assets and soon you can be helping us here on RCTW. As you've likely already seen here, the Tiger I is a modeling wonderland with a treasure trove of aftermarket goodies available. We welcome your questions, advice, frustrations and triumphs. And, as you've likely seen, too, we love photos.

Welcome from Ontario, Canada.
Pop a Heng Long 7.0 control system in it and you will be amazed at how far HL has come. Better low speed control and you can turn off the track recoil when you fire! Sounds are still kinda meh, but decent and a lot of the electronics whine is gone. Aliexpress and Toucan plus a bunch of other suppliers depending on your locale have the control board and transmitter for good prices.

Hi Klem,

Welcome to the forum. Tiger I is my focus. Since you come from a modeling background you're likely aware of the many details that the Heng Long could use some improvement on. I'll be watching any build posts you start.

Be well

oh gents...

this Tiger is sitting in the garage for the past 10 years. Jr managed to break the antenna when he was still a kid.
But I did get Eduard photo etched set at the time I purchased the kitty so those are still somewhere.

Due to work I am away from all my gadgets and won't be able to post any pictures soon. I will make it up though in the summer time.

My question for the wise ones is about the tank controller (TK) which one can be further connected to a standard receiver?
I've been reading about TK60 and TK 80 but I am sure there are others.

Also... are metal tracks a worhty upgrade? I plan to do it but that means I have to replace the whole system (drive gears for metal ones, drive wheels and anything else?)

thank you for responses

I'm no control board expert but I have at least a dozen tanks/vehicles using Clark boards. The TK-60 and TK-80 are discontinued. The TK22A is an absolutely rock solid board if you just want the basic stuff. TK50S gives you much more options and TK50ESP you can program your own sounds and comes with some voices. Obviously if you know what you are doing you can use your own radio but Clark are best used with the FlySky FS-i6s with the 10 channel rx. You also need to buy an old specific Sony tv remote to program them. Cheap on eBay.Matomart are probably the cheapest source for Clark boards if you live in North America. I'm sure posters who actually know what they are talking about will be along soon :haha:
