I think it has been said that early Tamiya box art showed many of us grey/gray Tigers and why so many have been built in that color (my own is included - although undergoing a repaint).

Yes, that's what misled me too Ecam.
There's been so many in films too, though they have done worse, like putting Patton tanks in German colours because they were more readily avaiable...
