Torro "open box" special, thoughts, opinions?
Re: Torro "open box" special, thoughts, opinions?
I unplugged the wiring from the daughter board and the MFU and separated the turret from the upper hull. I plugged things back in and fiddled with the wiring and the barrel recoil and flash started working...YAY!!!
So now on to the barrel elevation. I figured that a gear was not seated properly and the motor was OK because I could hear it running. I took the bottom off the turret to reveal the wiring and the elevation/recoil unit. (actually it was about this time I got the recoil/flash working). There are two screws that hold the unit together and one screw that holds the barrel to the recoil arm. When I popped the top (er..bottom?) of the unit all of the gears became dislodged. They are only held in place by pressure from the two halves...so be careful. I appears that the axle pin for the gear that rides on the motor's worm gear was no in place. I replaced all of the gears with their axle pins and reassembled the unit. I reconnected the wiring and with a little more fiddling with the wire I got the elevation to work. YAY! I then thought to myself "this isn't going to work when I get it put back together". I wasn't wrong LOL.

Fortunately, all I had to do was do some more fiddling. The wires in the turret were the culprit. I just had to use a pen as a tool to seat the multi-pin connector in the turret.

The bottom gear on the left was the culprit. The pin must have slid out and was probably hitting the gear for the recoil on the right. For some reason that pin is not captured like the other three and probably worked it's way loose during shipping and handling.
There is also a pin for the smaller gear for the recoil. Mine stayed with the other half of the case when I separated them. These pins are a loose fit to the gears, so again, be careful when taking it apart.
Do the operation on a good work table and don't be like me and do it sitting on a couch. I had a tough time finding the pin for the elevation gear

I gave up the couch or bed for building years ago. I also refuse to have carpet in my work area and try to sweep every couple of building days (to be able to locate the parts that get away).
Well done on your purchase and zero cost to get it working!

Three cheers, Barmonkey, on your getting the little gearbox back together. I recall all too well a similar experience a few years ago. I notice that you say the lanyard was missing from the transmitter. I have never seen a lanyard on the transmitter of a Torro tank, even the type that come with the fancy wooden crate. Maybe that's a new feature.
Re: Torro "open box" special, thoughts, opinions?
I was referring to the plastic loop on the transmitter itself. Where you would attach a lanyard.
I am happy things worked out for me. The solution ended up being rather simple. I hope this helps someone with a similar issue...

Glad to hear that the majority of the fix was a simple pushing of a plug fully into the connectors.
Ahh Asiatam elevation/recoil units.... I hate them. I replace mine all the time. Strip them for additional screws and mini Motors for other projects.
I use servo recoil and elevation for my Tigers that had Asiatam units in them.

Good advice: "Strip them for additional screws and mini Motors for other projects." Yes, Jarlath, I recommend scrounging every little goodie. Salvaged miniature hardware, especially, is always handy to have at hand.

Well I finally had time today to open the "Pandora's Open Box" special.
Function check revealed the only things not working was most importantly the cannon elevation then the smoker. I could care less about the smoker so I dove right in using Barmonkey's notes. Sure enough the motors were all working so I dismantled the elevation/recoil box. My issue wasn't the same gear but the same issue. The Top gear in his picture with the bent metal rod that attaches to the bracket on the end of the barrel that moves it had worked it's way off.

So carefully with his advice I opened up he gearbox and reset all the gears. I'm also amazed the gear closest to the motor isn't captured.
I do love the recoil and flash.
I didn't have any electronic or connections issues. I had bought a daughter board from Taigen for $4.99 but didn't even need it.
All runs as it should now. Literally about 45 minutes of my time and saved some good loot.

The only other issues are cosmetic. About 4-5 small paint blemishes that I'll remedy.
The box is a cool touch. It wasn't damaged but the lightweight hardware was mangled and will need to be upgraded and replaced.
Thanks for the support guys, And thanks Barmonkey for sharing the fix for our open box specials
