1/35 U.S Tank Destroyer M36 JACKSON upgrade to RRC

This thread has two NEW 1973 Vintage Tamiya M38 Tanks. One is "MOTORIZE" the other is "REMOTE CONTROL TANK" both are very rare but the "REMOTE CONTROL TANK" version is the Superstar of this thread.

The RCT version was new when I got it but was missing an important part.

Finally got another one of these M36 models in my collection Well, I have another but it was missing a crucial part (lower half of turret) so it never went together as the turret is the big deal with this M4 chassis with its 90mm gun.

The M36 was the most potent Sherman M4 variant with its 90mm HV gun.

Oh and this one is a REMOTE CONTROL TANK motorized version which makes it ready for RRC conversion

The M36 is the successor to the M10 TD.

I have found the Sherman based M4 Chassis to be the best 1/35 model chassis to convert to RRC due to its excellent robust track system. It takes less power to run the tracks on a M4 chassis and if properly tensioned, rarely if ever throws a track.

Very hard to find complete in the box especially any motorized version.

I am using parts from the No.35 M36 JACKSON "MOTORIZE SYSTEM" PRECESSION MODEL KIT as it says on the box above.

I am using the part to finish my No.35 M36 JACKSON "REMOTE CONTROL TANK" READY TO ASSEMBLE MODEL KIT.

I just need 1 part from "MOTORIZE SYSTEM" kit, The "Lower part of Turret" is what it is called in the instructions.

How the heck do you lose the "lower part of the Turret" and then have to sell the kit for less money as a result?

It has taken NEARLY 2 YEARS to finally get to finish the M36! I bought the M36 REMOTE CONTROL TANK kit about two years ago but was not able to build it because it was missing the lower Turret. July 2023 I picked up a complete unused M36 MOTORIZE kit for a reasonable cost on ebay so in effect, I will be using the M36 MOTORIZE KIT for parts for the M36 REMOTE CONTROL TANK kit.

I know very little about the Jackson: it appears to be an M10 with a re-designed turret. Is the "floor" of the turret actually part of the turret itself or is that Tamiya's representation of the lower hull as visible through the top of the turret?

Guten Morgen Her Doctor. Tamiya say that there models are exact scale and they probably are in most cases. The M38 appeared near the end of the war with its 90mm gun. From what I have read it was a vast improvement over the M10.

The REMOTE CONTROL TANK M38 model kit shown here is very hard to find these days. It is a prized model in my collection. The molding color on both of these M38 No.5 kits is a darker green than The 2 M10 No.42 kits that I have.

Many of the first M36's were re-turreted M10A1s (the Ford powered M10) When they ran short of the hulls they used the M4A3 Sherman hulls creating the M36B1.

The darker green may well be what Tamiya calls “Olive Drab 2” for post-war US tanks. E.g.: the color I used on my 1/35 Tamiya Walker Bulldog.

Got some time to get back on the M36 build. I am going to change the regulars ESC;s out use modified servos for ESC's in the M36.

I like them because the are way smaller than the RED ESC's I was using which are better used in 2s applications.

I have two of these M36 models but one is missing the lower half of the Turret and was that way when I bought it used on ebay.

Greetings Her Doctor, Yes! It is. Originally the puppy was controlled by a wired controller but I have plans to make it Radio Remote Control

Finally the M36 is done

I revised the radio system to use modified Servo amplifiers for ESC's. These are very small and are perfect for the 130 brushed motors that are used in most 1/35 model Tanks. Plus they are recycled from electronics junkyard so the cost me nothing other than the time to add two resistors to convert them to fully proportional Electronic speed controls.

These Tanks with the Sherman Long chassis have excellent poly Tracks,VSS Bogies and Roller Wheel system that works very well and takes very little power to operate.
