^ This is true, good quality armour steel doesn't rust like a 70's Austin Leyland or Alfa Romeo. Much more likely to be a dark brown/black colour, with silver spots around where the crew's hobnail boots have recently chipped away at it.

For the exhaust shields, google for 'Tiger 131 exhaust shields' - that will give you a good idea of where the normal paint colour stops and where it starts to discolour and darken. Remember that the shield has a chimney effect, so while it may be close to a hot casting at the bottom, there is cold air being drawn in that will cool the lower parts before becoming progessivly hotter and less able to counter the infra red radiation from the encased exhaust stack as it rises.

Also make sure you seal the salt properly, otherwise moisture will get in and start to flake the paint off - I have the same trouble with my exhausts when I use baking soda - looks amazing when first done, but not so much after a year or 2

I assumed the Astute was the boat coming in?

In all likelyhood there was an Astute following the boomer out as well, just to keep the Russian subs at bay - even without the current tensions its unlikely that she wasn't escorted out by an attack boat, either one of ours, or a friendly passing 688 or Virginia.

There was a Vanguard coming into Coulport and one leaving. The Vanguard that came in has sailed around to Faslane this evening.

As we live on at the mouth of Loch Long and the Holy Loch we can see the Trident subs on their way in and out of Coulport from the lounge window. We very rarely see the attack subs coming or going as they usually sail straight to Faslane. All boats are escorted out with only Marines in fast ribs, one or two MOD police boats, and four or more fast patrol boats. This depends on the boat. More security for the trident subs. If an American sub comes in there are usually a couple of helicopters and a frigate. The UK is far more relaxed about things. As they are more concerned about protesters in small boats than terrorist threats or larger boats in the sea ways. There are occasions when spy boats come up and there is very definite increased activity then. So from the configurations of the escort and tugs we usually know what type of boat is coming or going. We have never seen another sub escorting a Trident boat. They would need to be on the surface as well as there are diving restrictions for subs in peace time to avoid accidents by pulling fishing boats under water. I think they are only allowed to dive when they are into international waters.

I live in a rural woodland on the side of a glacial kettle. When I see subs, I eat them.

No answer to the above. We are unable to participate in the emporium that sells subs ways, as that food outlet has not arrived in our sleepy part of the world. We only have two fast food outlets and neither are McD or KFC.

Anyway, I could not resist getting a few outside shots.

Outdoor photos really add to the realism. Looking good.
