Re: camouflage newspapers
That is not as easy as you might think, German Newspapers were/are usually printed in High German and that means Rad would be able to read it but someone who learnt German in Schleswig Holstein (Me) could have a problem.Son of a gun-ner wrote:Here ya go Shaun, read away to your hearts contentjarndice wrote:Just a pity that the first negative was reversed.
I was humiliated in a Berlin military liason office when I spoke to the desk officer who had difficulty controlling her laughter at my apparently Yokel German because I was taught by a retired teacher from the local village.
I am reminded of Dr Jonson who when asked his opinion of a talking horse said it was not the linguistic skills of the animal rather that the creature could do it at all that impressed him.
I think I am about to upset someone

Re: camouflage newspapers
Jee,
That is one great find! Never saw anything like it! It reminds me of some of the old, early farm homes that I worked on that were being remodeled. It was common here in the MidWest to spend your money on the "barn red" paint (the most expensive) to highlight your farm, as the barn was your showcase and sign of how wealthy you were. The home got the cheap, chalky white paint. Many farmers had no money left to dress up the interior, so it was common to use old newspapers as wallpaper. We found it many times, and it was always interesting when you could still read it. I remember one that announced President Lincoln's assassination!
Never could save any of them as they just turned to dust upon trying to remove them.
Sorry, I digress once again!
Great stuff though!
Cheers,
Eric.

German cars, German girls, German beer, German firearms, German Shepherds, German motorcycles... Not necessarily in that order though!
UP THE IRONS!

Re: camouflage newspapers
Many American midwest “cabins” or sharecropper shacks used newspapers as insulation on the inside walls. Just FYI.
Never mind, just read Eric’s post more closely.

Be really interesting to look more into that .
I did some searching and it seems even in WW1 it was already done.
just google on tanks with newspapers and you will get some hits.

Good Morning,
Something about this is 'off' (and I don't mean us...everyone knows that tank guys are naturally barmy anyway)...I have some of the best reference books on Pz IVs and none of them show any tanks with newspapers plastered all over them. I'm not saying it could not have happened but why is it only showing up now and on the web? (Because we have been having quite a laugh at the expense of Russian armor with weird add-ons lately and some Russian hacker noticed?)
regards,
Painless

Good morning, Jee,
Was it? Dealing with the Internet here and a Russian one at that. Just saying that it did not come up on the Forum here and Russian Armor is a prime source of Builds around here.

I have no clue if they really did it, they guy on vkontakte was also not very clear about it.
I can only imagine they did it in the beginning of the war when the winter fell in.
As soon as they could get paint they would have used that (my guess).

Re: camouflage newspapers
It's not hard to believe never seen before pictures have surfaced in 2017, without having to don a tin foil hat and imagine outlandish Russian conspiracies as to why German WW2 armour hasn't been seen before.
Somewhere within my family are pictures from North Africa that have never been published or seen outside of my family. I'm trying to locate them, hoping they haven't been lost forever. I would put hard cash down to bet there are thousands upon thousands of unpublished photographs from the war.
