Mind you, it would'nt last long, if it fired at the same rate as an MG 42

There's plenty of room for it to pass through, Mick, and the guide in the Mantlet should offer support, ensure a fairly smooth passage. I nearly wrote 'transit' but that's used as a euphemism for bowel movements, these days.

A few seconds- tops.

Always best to have a fairly smooth passage Roy
If it does touch slightly, I would advise some silicon lube
Trouble with aluminium rubbing against aluminium, is its oxidized surface, it starts tearing up on a microscopic level at first (like rubbing two pieces of aluminium oxide sanding sheets together), causing more friction, and eventually it can get noticeably torn up, which causes jamming (not your type of jamming with your string instruments
).
But it's good to hear this recoil mechanism doesn't rely on that for its operation.
I thought I would explain the reasons for my concerns so that you didn't think I was going off my head
Yes, that MG 42 is ridiculously rapid firing.

Still, it's great to have a talented metallurgist on the team
I wonder what they use on all those Taigen, and Mato, style all-metal turrets? With them, metal on metal is the norm.
Still, with my Taigen barrel-recoil Tiger 1, I've never had to grease my barrel up in order to get a decent smooth recoil.
More hints and tips always welcomed in this thread

If you really want to see what friction can do try working an unlubricated rod of magnesium in and out and in and out of a tight fitting magnesium tube, I would recommend oven gloves at the very least or for the Piece di Resistance force an unlubricated solid rod of U 235 at high speed into a ball of Plutonium,
I would advise that you give yourself a few miles distance if you decide to go down that path

...and I was only just watching a video of 1950s US GIs being told off to get out of their protective trenches, and walk towards a towering mushroom cloud, shortly after the detonation, Shaunjarndice wrote:If you really want to see what friction can do try working an unlubricated rod of magnesium in and out and in and out of a tight fitting magnesium tube, I would recommend oven gloves at the very least or for the Piece di Resistance force an unlubricated solid rod of U 235 at high speed into a ball of Plutonium,

Then again, when you see what the fertiliser, ammonium nitrate, can do- irrespective of friction- it's very shoc

Turning uranium? That explains sooo much.midlife306 wrote:I’ve been running a machine turning uranium rods & the swarf caught fire due to the tool going off & starting to rub, there’s no hitting the emergency stop, you just run........
