Thanks a lot guys. Although I prefer allied tanks I might start on the heng long tiger, as you all suggest it as a good start. In regards to your questions Herman, I have some limited experience with small scale modelling, but I haven't scratch built any parts for those models.
If any of you guys have any more helpful advice, please let me know.

Hi, If for instance you decide to go for the HENG LONG Tiger1 and you wish to discover what is doable then I suggest you go to the "HENG LONG Build" site on the forum and look for a Tiger 1 build with multiple pages and start at page one and progress, there you will discover how to make a working MG Mantlet ball mount out of just a child's plastic bead and as you read on and as you work on your build your knowledge and your abilities ever improve,
A tip, if you do decide on a Tiger 1 build as Herman hinted earlier, research a particular Tank and make it your own,
It really is very satisfying when you finish it.
The Tiger 1 has more upgrades available from dealers than any other 1/16 Tank and most parts fit any make but if you are in doubt please ask us first.

I found two heng long tigers on rchighperformancehobbies.com.au, ( thanks Estnische )but the only differences were that one had metal treads and gearbox, and cost about $70 more. Is it worth buying the more expensive one just for these aspects? I'm not really familiar with the benifits of these two upgrades.

Personally , as what I did , buy the plastic track version , play around for six to eight months with her , learning how to pull it apart , which you will , then when you are clued up on Heng Long idiosyncricies you can upgrade.
Had my T1 for near on 18 months and just last night put on metal tracks , sprockets and idlers.
Did a metal gearbox upgrade and a Gen 3 2.4gh upgrade in the months before when beer tickets became available.

I echo Aussie, Buy the cheap Tank,
You can get used to your Tiger 1 and as you do so you will at the same time hopefully through this Forum learn all about rc Tanks,
Armed with that knowledge you will be better able to avoid rip offs and you will know what you want to do with your Tanks.
This is a great fun hobby but there is a temptation to do everything immediately, try to avoid that,
Instead research Tanks , Transmitters, Gearboxes, Batteries, Control Boards and DEALERS,
If you have any questions you already know where to come and remember we will never tell you what you should do with your Tanks but any problems with them we almost certainly have the answer, Just ASK.

Tracks you want Taigen Steel(unless you go Impact) and for gears, look for Black Steel gear sets, versions include full bearing options and different ratios.
Dont be put off by taking one apart.................be methodical, & if you are not sure, just ask & we will do what we can to assist.
Best plan forward is to find a picture of a Tiger you would like to replicate, then set to it.
That way you have a form of manual that can keep you on the right track.
Parts then follow...........the old "form follows function" adage.
You will find yourself in time looking at every day items for any possible use they might have in Tanks !..........
