The longer drill arrived this morning and, after a lot of cursing, swapping drill bits and generally tweaking things, I have fitted the led into the panzerschreck. The body of the led may be 3 mm, but the rim at the back is 3.7 mm and won't go into a 3 mm hole. Having sorted that out, I then realised that there is what looks like a resistor wired directly to the led. That won't fit onto a 3 mm hole either! My pin vice won't take anything larger than 3 mm and I needed a 4 mm hole. Have you ever tried drilling out metal, turning the drill with your fingers?
To finally get the led in place, I had to unsolder it from the board. I have filled the hole where I went through the side. Tomorrow, I can get everything assembled. The led will be a permanent fixture, in that it can only be removed from the front by disconnecting it.
I can then get on with a small diorama to display it. I have found some 2000 mah re-chargeable AA batteries which may be useful to power it all.
