Bergpanzer 3

Now I know that I spent an awful long time building the Kodiak AEV, but try as I might I could never get the arm working fast enough to make it a worthwhile model. Believe me I tried everything, and was almost there, but at the end of the day...it was never going to be up to scratch. Seeing as bare hulls are like hens teeth nowadays, I bit the bullet and pulled it apart, so that I was back to what is basically a Leopard hull with big holes in it. The dozer blade worked a treat though.

The plan is to build a Bergpanzer 3. I know that there are some very skilled modellers out there in Europe who have built some incredible ones, and if was a lottery winner I could buy the £4500 kit that is available. One master class model is here, prepare to be amazed at what some modellers can do!:

So, after attacking the Kodiak and cutting my hands to pieces on sharp stryrene, this is my starting point.

The dozer blade will also come off as the Bergpanzer has a different shape and arms.

My problem at the moment is finding a set of blueprints, or good pics, on the web, that I can take measurements from. I have started designing the upper in Openscad, by scaling measurements taken from various walkaround pics, but this is going to be error prone (though maybe not noticeable). For a model that is so popular, I am amazed at the lack of info that is out there. There were also numerous design changes, so as to how I am going to get all of the measurements for 'one' Berg, is anybody's guess.

There is some serious miniature engineering in that thread. Over 14 months work, from the dates of the posts, and it is still not finished. I am sure you are doing yourself a disservice regarding your own work. There does come a point, i would think, when attention to detail can become excessive, and also, perhaps, obsessive.

It does indeed, it's that golden chalice, the perfect scale model, with every detail included. I envy those with the engineering skills to create models like that, they have a level of patience that eludes me. Me? I tend to go for a model that looks like the real thing, but that will survive being driven round a lumpy, bumpy outdoor battlefield without too much falling off!

Thanks Alwyn, I looked at the Canadian one, but it looks a bit too bland, though it would have been way easier to do. I already have links to the Prime Portal pics, but its so frustrating that when these guys go to all of the trouble to take all of those pics, they rarely take a square on view of the front, back and sides. If they did I could zoom the pics up and take measurements off them.

Thanks for the info Alwyn, I did find some elusive angle shots in amongst the links, that solved a mystery or two. I wish I could establish the angle of the left side plate, if I can't I will guesstimate it.

I am currently printing a skeleton for the crew quarters, doing it six sections in case anything goes pear shaped whilst printing, as that way I will only waste a small amount of filament and time, rather than the 35 hours that printing it in two sections would take. It will all be faced up with styrene, and mounted on a full width flat plate. I might have all of the sections done by this evening.

I should have cut the front deck out of the upper hull before I did all of this, I now discover that HL have track covers on the lower hull that don't quite line up with the track covers on the upper hull, the base of the new parts should sit almost level with the hinge line on the track guards. I will have to bodge my way around this as I need a lip to glue the new upper deck parts onto. This will in turn affect the roof height...grrrr...much cutting and grinding to do now.

This was all a bit of a challenge, but I got there in the end. Bits of filling to do, but the main work is done on this part of the project.
