Asiatam/Taigen Stug IV

Post by Arnie_DK »

Okay, so Alpha have been kinda nagging ( :P ), for me to start this build thread, so here goes.

Ever since I got a metal lower hull for my Panzer IV, I have wanted to do something with the plastic hull it left behind. The original MFU that came with the Panzer IV had a defect, so it could only turn the turret to the right, but not left. Otherwise the board worked as it should, so I quickly decided I wanted to do a Stug, since it had no turret and I could use both the Underhull and MFU, without sacrificing another PZ IV in the process. Recyckling to save the planet and all that stuff ;)

Anyways, so far I have not done much, but do the basic assembly of the Stug hull and done the suspension mod as on my Pz IV.

My plans are to get a Taigen/Asiatam recoil unit for the hull, as I cant get a HL unit to fit in there. Think this will take some time and require a few modification inside the hull, as the space is very limited.
For the lower hull, I will be installing some "ajustable" arms for the idler wheel and some metal holders for the return rollers (Had them left over from the Pz IV build).

Will also try and fix a pair of 5:1 gearboxes to go inside. This will also be a learning experience. I accidentally from the little knob on on of my hex screws, while trying to adjust the gear on the motor. Need to get the small screw out and replace it with a new one. The other gearbox needs a replacement bushing, since I made a bubu while trying to install them in my KV (long story short: I was stupid ;) )

So. Picture time...

I just hope I can figure out, how to make the gun elevation/recoil work. So far I have no real clue, only a few theories.
I've read somewhere that the hull might be too small, for the Tagien/Asiatam recoil unit, and the HL recoil/elevation might need quite a bit of modification to fit...

Havent been able to find any build threads conserning this issue.
Seen a lot of people using servoes of al sorts, but thats mostly people using TK or IBU boards...

Good afternoon,
The Taigen recoil and flash should work in your casemate, Arnie. I mounted one of them in my StuG III Ausf B with doublestick tape and epoxy. The recoil unit only needed to have the recoil arm shortened and in the case of your StuG IV, that may not even be needed.
regards,
Painless

Arnie,
It is an 'exact' fit, I won't kid you. ;o) It can be done without too much stress tho'. The recoil and flash is impressive on a smaller Assault Gun like the StuG III.

Painless

LOL...Painless beat me too it...I was going to suggest checking his build out for the gun fit ....Yours should have the same amount of room Arnie

Painless...thanks for jumping in....your assistance will be valuable ;)

Have actually seen it before, but couldnt remember where. Found it and saved it fo future reference.
My gun mantle is a bit different though, But I think I can make it work, if I get creative ;)

You look like you have your Traverse installed...I think Painless left his off....No photos of what I did with my L70...but I built an entire rig that fit into the upper hull out of aluminum...the aluminum housing fit everything quite nicely....I did have to lengthen the wires to the gears and smoker though as the RX is fit into the rig ...Painless's is much simpler and it's Taigen...So would probably be a better blueprint for you to follow

Good Luck Arnie

yeah it seems Painless had a nice flat area to work with, where the Asiatam is a few pieces assembeled. Might just assemble it. Cut it flush at the mantlet and fill it, to get that same flat area.
Will see what my options are, once I get my hand on a Recoil unit (Is it payday yet???)

Alternatively, I could cut away, some of the wall, between the firing chamber and engine room, and attach the recoil to the gun mantlet itself
