It just needs someone like you Andy, a trader with his finger on the pulse to nudge them along a tad.

A famo would be brilliant, but in the meantime how about this?

Hi Well if you did do it Chris I know where to hide the battle unit the same as my panzer 4 and the I.R.emitter in the lower recoil cylinder but making it elevate and recoil would be the secret to this if that would be posible without to many wires showing it would be great to see.Seen a hummel with working recoil I think he used fishing line.

Hi folks,

Well my two 88s arrived from Shanghai today. On getting them home I rang Tony (tiger205) so he could have a drool and set about unpacking one. As I might sell on the second one, I unpacked the slightly damaged looking one. There was a hole in the back of the box and a wheel bogie (don't know the correct word) was slightly loose inside the box. So I thought it best to open this one.

It looked like someone had spotted this before, opened the box, decided against doing anything, sellotaped it back, then sent it to that stupid Brit on the other side of the world...

Anyway, on unpacking it I noticed one of the restraining wires had never been secured properly, hence the bogie movement. This had snapped two small plastic parts. I found one on the floor where I unpacked it and the other stuck by chance to a piece of sellotape on the base. Another very small plastic piece was broken and missing entirely.

The whole unit was very securely secured to the base with wire ties. So securely that I'm sure more damage would be done removing them if I hadn't been so careful. I recommend that you use snips to remove the wires to protect the 88.

On getting it out of the box I was impressed, but far less impressed that I thought I would be. Yes, the detail is good for the size, but not as good as it could be. Many parts were badly glued, leading to poor registration of several parts. Some just bad design. Both mine have guns that only have one pivot point in line, the other 'free'. One of the elevation dampers was not held properly and flapped about as I tried to elevate the gun.

I tried to align the barrel so it slipped into its two pivot points, but it was physically impossible. I had to trim off some plastic where the toothed semicircular elevation gear would have been driven by a small gearwheel. I could then get the gun to pivot correctly.
The elevation damper was fixed by using long forceps to reach the two sides of its pivot and force the plastic to its correct position.

One of the bogie holder clips didn't latch meaning any movement of the bogie caused the bogie to drop off the cruciform. I had to carefully trim off some plastic from the latching hook so that it latched and held as the other bogie did.

There are 4 toolboxes, two per bogie. Thanks to a design flaw, two of their lids on the same side don't sit flush, leading to them popping out or breaking the _very_ tiny spigot that holds them in on the flawed side (the axe gets in the way).

Another thing is that the (multi-part) barrel isn't hollow, so you can't look through the barrel to see daylight through it. I've tried drilling from both sides, but I don't have a long enough 4mm drill bit!! Disassembly of the gun into constituent barrel sections will be required to fix this.

Oh, and one of the cruciform leg stays was broken.

Okay, okay, that's all the negative stuff!

Am I happy? No.
Am I unhappy? Also no!

It's a nice piece of kit, with many flaws due to being assembled to a budget. It's one of those things that would have been much better made as a kit for enthusiasts to build. For a 'toy' for kids age 5+ (well, that's me, I'm older than 5!!) it's fine. However, I doubt any 'kid' who isn't an enthusiast would have seriously broken many bits off it within a few minutes. It's rather fragile due to its very complex construction. It would have been much better (though far more expensive) as a metal model, or at least metal where damage could otherwise easily occur.

I would have reservations about towing it behind anything in my garden as I reckon I would be scouring my garden for broken off bits for several hours later!

I had reservations about getting it as it doesn't 'do' anything (like our tanks do), and am wondering the wisdom of my purchase. Tony (tiger205) was however impressed by its detail and did think that it was worth the money for what it is.

It sort of reminds me of the early days of HL almost 4 years ago, when as soon as you got an HL, you were best off stripping it down entirely and reworking the whole thing from the start before you used it. As I say, it would be nice as a kit.

I don't think there's much point in putting photos up, as there are others elsewhere on the net. Plus I haven't taken any!! What does surprise me though is that no-one else has reported such production problems as I have experienced. Perhaps I was unlucky and this was a Friday Afternoon one!

Happy tanking,

Yep, just about to say you must have a friday afternoon jobby, or perhaps you had the one they built just after they found out they were all gonna lose thier jobs!

Didn't have one single problem you had thankfully. It took me about half an hour to take off all the restraining clips but after that there were no breakages or loose pieces.

Mines just for show anyway and after a couple of minor additions and some weathering, I'll be more than happy.

Hi Guys Its here spent the last couple of hours playing with it .Mine arrived unhurt from transport thanks to Andy big box well packed and undamaged .Next thing was to get all the plastic bands and tie wraps off this all done wow the detail on it alone is worth the money ,Having said that it did have a bent barrel and the recoil didnt slide back ,so off to the shed just a quick strip down took the barrel out and thought that while its out will drill the barrel 4mm so I can fit a flash in it ,so if you intend to do this ,its better to split the big part of the barrel inside you will find a spring and a plunger this is to eject shells (why would you want to eject an unfired shell !!!)after this is removed a quick rub with round file to clear way for wires ,then drilled out the front part of barrel reassyembled the barrel glued it so it was straight sorted out the slide so it would recoil now it slides back almost under its own weight this bit done then had to sort the gun trunnions out mine was the same as Nige slightly out of line but easy fix .Now to sort out wire routes for fully I.R. have already made barrel so it will take a flash will have to workout where to fit emmitter, hoping to fit it in lower recoil cylinder ,then see if it can be adapted to turn .I think elevation may be posible its if I can make it recoil ,after a quick look the only way I can see is fishing line its free moving now so if I could attach a line in the middle and fix it the to lines from here one to the front of recoil unit and one to rear it would pul the barrel backwards and forwards ,will have to investgate more and let you know .

regards pete
