Here you go Jakalope,
An explanation of the issue with the commanders cupola, and how to fix it.

This is part of an excellent series of posts on things to fix on your Tiger by Birger, which are all available in the things to fix on your new tank/H/L Tiger I thread. Just scroll down until you find them.

I should like to point out something that every 1/16 r/c Tiger 1 has on its hull and should not, The aerial stowage tube on the rear top side of the hull is only on the left rear (looking from the front) but TAMIYA, TORRO, TAIGEN, HENG LONG and everyone I have missed out all have one on EACH side, it can be a bit of a pain to remove, but if you don't want some ten year old smart a*se pointing it out it is better off than on, there now you feel much better? In truth you are doing a lovely job, and we all know how challenging any build is let alone when all the knowalls are looking over your shoulder.

Hi ALPHA old friend, I think you are beginning to understand why I am so camera shy, But the double aerial stowage has always made me smile, When HENG LONG brought 1/16 rc armour to us neer do wells, (may sinous virgins ply them with all the wonders of paradise) They released a press denial that the TIGER 1 was a copy of the TAMIYA TIGER, amazing coincidence them both wrongly having two aerial stowage tubes and even when they revise the moulds (mostly for the better) they still include them!
Have a great week end. shaun

Here's a crazy thought Shaun ...the second tube could be for that "special" command tank antenna...you know the one that splits upjarndice wrote:Hi ALPHA old friend, I think you are beginning to understand why I am so camera shy, But the double aerial stowage has always made me smile, When HENG LONG brought 1/16 rc armour to us neer do wells, (may sinous virgins ply them with all the wonders of paradise) They released a press denial that the TIGER 1 was a copy of the TAMIYA TIGER, amazing coincidence them both wrongly having two aerial stowage tubes and even when they revise the moulds (mostly for the better) they still include them!Have a great week end. shaun

Really though Shaun...no need to be camera shy... the only one that will say anything critical is me

For the Lords sake the last time I counted there was 260 million of you, I don't know about the stowage of command tank aerials perhaps David can help but it would make some kind of sense if they stowed them in the false gun barrel. it was false wasn't it?

Re: My first tank build.
As far as I know those funky aerials serve the same purpose as the strange round ones on the Shermans.... apparently a different wave length radio set...meant for a spotter and command tank...there are a lot of Panthers with that rig... I've never really seen it depicted on a Tiger... but there had to be some with that set upjarndice wrote:For the Lords sake the last time I counted there was 260 million of you, I don't know about the stowage of command tank aerials perhaps David can help but it would make some kind of sense if they stowed them in the false gun barrel. it was false wasn't it?shaun

Don't know what you are looking at, but the commander's hatch line was at 72 degrees to the front line.doc larsson wrote: commander's hatch ? 45 degrees to the loader's hatch
In fact the whole layout of the cupola was obtained by dividing it into 10 equal parts.

A "Befehlstiger" would make an interesting project for someone wanting to do some scratchbuilding. The differences were as follows;jarndice wrote: I don't know about the stowage of command tank aerials perhaps David can help but it would make some kind of sense if they stowed them in the false gun barrel. it was false wasn't it?shaun
- The gun was fully operational but less ammunition was stored.
The MG opening in the mantlet was sealed up.
There was a standard antenna on the turret roof.
There was a standard antenna mount on the left hull (no S-mine launcher)
The right-side antenna was on a ceramic insulator, in a sunken pot. This was for the "star" antenna and the insulation was good for 30W of transmission power.
There was a small chimney on the right hull roof.
There were two clips for the 8 meter mast on the hull right side (this mast was stored inside the tank).
There was a storage tube for "star" antennae, on the hull rear wall
If it was a Late Tiger, the entire rear wall tool storage was mirrored.

Ask me for more details if you need 'em.
