I managed to resist the grey/dunkelgelb combination and have just given the turret its first coat of xtracrylix dunkelgelb which has more of a brown hue than the tamiya dunkelgelb and is a colour i prefer.

Not sure how well this photo will show the difference but the hull is tamiya and the turret is xtracrylix;

The xtracrylix dries to a satin finish and so will need a coat of flat clear when the paintwork is complete. i hope the satin finish may help with decals - my track record with decals is ugly to say the least!

The more i am using this xtracylics paint the more I like it. It is water thinned so no need for acrylic thinners. It takes longer to set than Tamiya but dries to a nice hard finish. The instructions on the bottle said to thin with 10%-15% water but I ended up using 30% water to get the viscosity I like. It also goes on better as several very light coats with about 1 hour between coats.

In order to get some experience with the paint I am using i have sprayed an early production Tiger turret. because the paint dries to a satin finish i decided to experiment with an oil based pin wash. It worked well and is quite subtle - I used two parts black to one part raw umber for the wash. I think this photo shows the difference between the xtracrylix dunkelgelb on the turret and the tamiya dark yellow on the hull quite well.........

Have been studying 'how to videos' on decals on youtube and oh boy have I been doing it wrong. I hate applying decals but hopefully using the decal fixer and softener technique will cure my woes........ time will tell. i also hope that applying the decals to a nice smooth satin finish will help.

The color looks spot on and the pin wash is a fave of mine to bring out detail in large surface are things with bolts, depressions, grooves, etc. Looking forward to pics of the decals. ;o)
