HL King Tiger-is this battery a good replacement one?

Post by Marc780 »

For the nicad that comes with it.

I found this here site about on nicad batteries, which offers the following facts, nicads are supposed to be run down to no less then 1% of charge before recharging, the advice on the site i found was to run down the device until it started slowing down or almost stopped, but not left on until the battery is dead...Here is the site i found, about Nicads,

http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/ ... ries/292/2

Also it says Nicads have a life of no more then 500 charges and charging too often or too soon shortens their life. They lose 1% of charge per day or about 33% per month. (So i guess you'd want to charge them every two months or so-even if you are not using it-because once nicads are dead, there's no more recharging, they remain dead).

I have a VOM (volt ohmmeter or multimeter instrument)and know the basics but apparently its tough to reliably measure the state of charge on a nicad. Because they stay at a measured 1.2v per cell, all the time you are using the device it powers, right up until they drop to 1% (time to recharge). In other words, you could drive the tank for 5 minutes, then 10, then 20, and measure the voltage at each point...and it will measure 1.2v per cell, EACH TIME. i.e. will CONTINUE to show 1.2v, regardless of state of charge! So even if you wanted to, or could install some kind of meter on them-they're difficult to meter because these batteries' voltage output are pretty much all or nothing.

Anyway my questions are, if some wise person can please answer them,

-is this battery (NIMH nickel metal hydride ) an acceptable straight swap for the 7.2v, 1700 maH battery that comes with my HL King tiger,

-can i use the same charger that came with the tank or do i need another one?

-i have some familiarity with lipo batteries, when i was fooling with r/c airplanes 10 years ago. I know some people like to run their tanks a long time and they go to a lipo. But having blown up one or two lipos by charging them wrong, ( dumba$$ behavior? yes at times and not proud of it at all), I can't say i like them all that much but if they're better for some reason, i'd consider them, because i think i still have the charger around...not a minor consideration I think, really considering how it all adds up so fast.

I think the standard charge lasting a half hour or so would be fine for me, if the battery performs at the same level for a while so i don't think i will go to that kind of battery. Anyway if someone knows if this battery is worth $28 (17 pounds) i'd like to know what you think of it.

Good Evening,
Go and get one or two of these and put your savings back into your pocket. It is a Venom Power 7.2 volt, NIMH 3000MaH and comes with a variety of plugs and ran me 20.89 US retail + tax from Hobby Town, a local shop. They can probably be found even cheaper online. My tanks really came to life running on this battery vs the HL stock battery.
regards,
Painless

Whilst that is a better battery than the stock yellow one
As painless says, you could do so much better.
I would say at least 3000 nimh.
Also try & get a branded battery as the cheap ones are never
As good as they say they are.
Cheers

Thanks painless and lister! Going to check into the venom...next project the wheels turn hard, no wonder I smelled hot electrics on the first run!

Hey Marc,

You should always run in your motors with no resistance on them before you go a playing my friend! My program is:
Put in better grade of gear lubricant. (look for one that is melt proof) remove tracks, put the tank up on stand run forward at 3/4 speed (duct tape on the controller or use trims) for 5 mins. Run in reverse for 5 mins. As this is running I look for any issues in loose stuff or gear alignment.
Repeat for 10 mins at full speed forward and back. Replace tracks and still on the stand run again for 10 mins forward and back at variable speeds. Look for any binding on the tracks and all the wheels run O.K. Keep in mind there will be some play to the components.

Some guys even remove the motors and break them in with abrasives or toothpaste but I have never gone to that much trouble. I find if I use a really good gear lubricant I have no issues so far.

On the batteries I agree with the boys get a better battery. I run Turnigy 3000 and 5000. In my KT which has all kind of extra power draws (double upgraded speakers, convoy light, 480 motors, waltherson gearboxes, metal sprockets, tracks, clark board) the 5000 will last 2 to 3 hours fairly hard running. The battery you are showing here is the standard one we get in with our Matomart tanks. It lasts about 20 mins in my KT. Good as a little back up but not much more.
Make sure you get a good charger too. The ones that come with the tank are useless for so many reasons the main one being they have no monitoring system so no automatic cut off when your battery is full, no cell checks, nothing. The good ones are not that expensive. I think I paid $30 from Hobby King for the one I have now.

Good tip dgsselkirk  ...I always lube my gearboxes ... and after My Kv... also check and make sure none of the gear axles are binding :D

Greetings Marc.... I use those type of batteries when I "work" on my tanks... you know ...for test runs and such... but if I'm going to play ...I use lipos

There are many different brands... I just like Intellect.. there is only one drawback... you will need to get a special charger for them
I use the Imax mini
Image
DO NOT use a multi purpose charger... and DO NOT.... speed charge a lipo

It's a balance charger... and doesn't cause the batteries to overheat... thus safe charging... and less chance of ignition... roughly translated .. fire :O

The upside is the performance is almost ten fold over the NICDs or NIMHs...so your play time is much longer... and like the metal NIMHs.. have no memory...so you can charge them at any point

Good luck

What about volt cut off so you don't run the lipo batt by running it to a to low voltage condition and ruining it. I'd like to go lipo myself, but the speed control in most of these units don't have BEC protection for lipo and I have not seen any conversion to a more technically advanced speed control or if you could upgrade to a tekin crawler type

It depends what electronics your using. The IBU2 and I guess ??? other recent electronics also have built in protection in it will stop the tank from driving if voltage too low.

Even before I moved away from the RX18 and used a LiPo the RX18 kept going into standby when voltage got low. admittedly cannot rely on it it been 100% reliable.
