What's wrong with the existing one, they don't work if they are overfilled, or the usual breakdown problem is a broken element so they can be replaced with a wire wound resistor which is more reliable.
The proportional smoker is better than the standard fixed speed one (less noisy at lower speeds) that's the best thing to do if you want to it to fit your existing mountings, or you can go the whole hog and fit a custom made replacement smoker but that involves more modification.

I have the proportional smokeunit.. Works ok when the tank is standing still (little puff, nothing spectacular), but on the move you do not see the smoke at all, so tbh I think it's not really worth it.. I've seen modified 'super smokers' online that are fan driven which seem to work a lot better.. No idea where to buy them though..

That sounds like the standard (non proportional) unit and if it just stopped smoking then it sounds as if the element has broken but the pump is still working, as I said some people have successfully replaced the element with a wire wound resistor which is much more robust and does the same job.
The alternative is to go the modified route, some people replace the pump with a fan which makes it quieter or go for a "super smoker" but that's a complete replacement non standard unit so means modifying the internals of your tank.
If you read through the various posts in this section you will see what other people have done.
