HL Ring Gear mod for full turret rotation tooth cutting trick
I don't know if it's been posted before, but I found out a neat trick.
I wanted to take out the stop on the turret rotation gear on a HL tank. This can be done, it involves cutting teeth into the 1/4" block that is on the ring. What I found out is that if you have a second ring gear from another tank, you can screw them together with two of the mounting holes back to back- but 180 degrees around. Then you can use the teeth of the one ring gear to mark or use as a guide to cut the second ring gear's teeth (two of them, BTW). Or you can give a shot of paint across the teeth and unscrew the two ring gears, having a template painted on your modifying ring gear.
Sorry, but I was "in the groove" and forgot to take pics.....my bad!

Thats a good way to do it and the little hobby razor saws work great for that.

Re: HL Ring Gear mod for full turret rotation tooth cutting trick
hey guys,
ive done this mod twice, but i did it the sortof more hit and miss style, i just hacked at it with a hobby knife untill the stumps slightly resembled gear teeth LOL
i wont be doing this again on any more hl tanks i get, as i will probably end up forgetting which way round the turret orriginally was. i did it on my tiger, and forgot, and i accidentaly turned it about 3 times th wrong was as i had forgotten, so the wire's stapped off!

Hi Dmon1996,
Great idea! I always did it by eye, but that is a top way of doing it!
@Matdragon - I'm surprised you don't keep an eye on how much you turn in each direction. Having said that, my tanks need so much maintenance that they have to be stripped down before the cables have a chance to get twisted up!

I just tried to cut the gears free hand and made a complete bol___ks of it so had to by a new turret to get the gear ring of it and the did as suggested above to cut the gears
Re: HL Ring Gear mod for full turret rotation tooth cutting trick
I used a dremel tool with a wand and a small rotary saw blade. I find it works great for straight cuts and removes virtually no material in the cut. Glad everyone likes the template trick.
I actually was doing this for my Tamiya Sherman, which I am using the turret rotation equipment from a Heng Long. I have the turret rotation stuff from Tamiya, but I'm fitting a big 7.5V sealed lead acid which sits on top of the lower hull. So, HL to the rescue! I'll post pics of this when I'm a bit farther along, but it's working great!
