I have the M41 Bulldog and I would like to replace the stock motors with new ones for more speed and torque. What would you recommend? Any suggested vendors in the U.S would be much help for faster shipping since I'm in the U.S
Many RC tank web stores have better motors that are direct fit. I think that the mini Velineon brushless from Traxxas is 380 sized, others are 550 sized. Direct fit upgrade motors are usually 480, so the mini Velineon should fit, at least with some small modifications on mounting hole locations. The Velineon motors will also need new ESCs. Brushed motors are easier to install as then you shouldn't need new ESCs.
I've just fitted Graupner 400 speed 7.2v in my HL Pershing direct swap. I got them from Steve @ Welsh Dragon Models although based in UK will ship to US (I think one member said shipped quicker than when bought from another tank shop in the US)
You need to either reuse the stock motor pinions of get replacements (10teeth) but if you source alternative pinions be careful as may not mesh too well.
The RX18 has it built in, but there is a limit to size of motor you can had i.e. to big a current drain it will rapidly over heat the electronics and burn out.
For info I've fitted 480 size motors rated at 5A and run off the RX18 with out problems (although have added a cooling fan). I found these motors are easily as powerful as you need (pulls a 7kg Tiger at speed) so going for more powerful is really going to give any benefit and could actually cause damage to the drive train.
http://rctankwars.com/Products.asp These are the promax 400 series and come with the pinion gears as well. Phil is in the USA (ca) and has a great history with the forum members.
These are a direct replacement. If you go with the 480 series fan cooling the RX18 would be wise. That modification is also on the forum.

Are you running those in the stock HL metal gearboxes?
Thanks for all the info everybody.
Is there any noticable increase in speed after upgrading the stock motors with the MAXX 400 motors or the ProMax 480 motors?
The maximum speed of my tank is comparable to a slow walking pace and i would like to make it reach at least 10mph/16kmh.
Yes,but but the gearbox has an effect as well as the pinion gear size.their is a gearing calculator in the download section that will allow you to input information to determine the scale speed.

Hi Glen B
Yes stock HL plastic gearbox (also done same on another tank with metal gearboxes). Tanks like the bulldog, pershing, ZTZ99 all have small drive sprockets which automatically make it lower ratio than say a Tiger or KV1 which have large drive sprockets. So you can get away with a motor swap, I would say for the tanks with large drive sprockets you need 3:1 gearboxes to help give the tank more power and then possibly upgrade to faster motors.
