What is needed to convert to HL IR Battleready?
What is needed to convert to HL IR Battleready?
I know that you need an Rx-18 board, a HL apple, but what else is needed? Is it just an IR LED that plugs into the RX-18 board, or is there a subboard in between? Has anyone split their HL Stug and taken pics? Any help would be much appreciated- I've read rumors that the HL IR tower (apple) will onlywork with the Stug, and I can't figure out why....
And I am not interested in any other battle system. Thanks anyway, but $40-50 per tank is all I can afford. So $150 or more per tank is useless to me. Besides, I live fairly close to Mato Toys who have great prices on the HL stuff I'll need.
Thanks for the assistance in advance.

Re: What is needed to convert to HL IR Battleready?
rccommand sells 2 kits, one with the HBU + RX18 and (presumably) the IR emitter + all the wiring, and a kit with all of the above + the flash unit.
http://www.rccommand.com/Tank%20Upgrade%20Parts.php
Looks like it has all you need...? I think the comment about the stug being the only one compatable was due to the fact that you need the RX18 board, and the stug was the first one with it - I have Panzer III and IV's that have a blanking plate glued over a HBU sized hole in the turret roof
and I know people are reporting getting tanks other than the stug with the RX18 board.
Hope this helps?
Mart

Re: What is needed to convert to HL IR Battleready?
Hi It all depends on wether you want it to battle other tanks .The Heng Long system will only battle other heng long tanks it wont work against Tamiya tanks or other tanks with battle systems there is a board which you can add to a heng long and battle against other tamiya compatable systems and it dosnt cost much its called BSU Interop adapter if you P.M. your e-mail address to me I will send you details the price is around 40euros .
Other systems can be fitted such as Darkiths DBC/DBU these if you assemble them your self are about $75 for the one that uses heng long radio ,or the EGS system which is slightly more and rctankhobby have a system not sure about the price around $90 then you steart to get very expencive with systems such as El-mod and Tamiya
regards pete

Re: What is needed to convert to HL IR Battleready?
So if I read this right pete - Dmon could buy the upgrade kit from RCU which would allow him and his buddies to battle each other with just his HL tanks, and if he wanted Tamiya compatability later he could add this BSU Interop to make it all work?
I thought the wave length that the HL system used was different to the Tamiya system?

Hi Peter could you please let me have the details of this BSU interop unit as I would like to get into IR battles with my Stug . Many thanks

Re: What is needed to convert to HL IR Battleready?
Can I just add that I have an Elmod Tiger 1 with their CSI battle system. Greeny has a Leopard with the Tamiya system. We can battle each other, though I haven't tried the Elmod advanced mode against a Tamiya yet (This gives damage symptoms such as turret won't rotate, tracks not working etc, depending on where the shot hit). It may be down to the fact the Tiger has a recessed bulb, but I have to be very accurate with my shots, whereas the Leopard seems to get a hit on me if it is pointing in my general direction. The Tamiya can even fire at a stone wall that I am using as cover and still get me through the gaps between the stones?
As I wanted a 2nd tank, I decided to try and build the best I could for the least cash. I chose an HL Bulldog that Forgebear sold me. It already has metal tracks, gearboxes and drive sprockets, and as the RX13 was not reversing on one track he threw in an RX14 set which I fitted.
Next up was the battle system. A question that we all ponder, in view of the cost of both the Tamiya and Elmod systems.
I looked at every system that I could find, and settled on the kit built Darkith system. It doesn't look very difficult to build and at £61 inc postage it is a bit of a bargain. It is Tamiya compatible, and adds sounds and enhanced functionality as well. It is also an easy task to add a muzzle flash to any HL board for the cost of an LED and two pieces of wire.
As for the Stug RX18 battle system, there is an emitter, that feeds through the gun circuitry, and then to the board. The problem is that as the missing link is in the gun, it is not possible to buy the battle system and install it in another tank. The only parts that you can buy are the RX18 board, and the apple. You cannot buy the infra red emitter, so its a non starter.
EGS do a plug and play system, its Tamiya compatible, but offers less functionality than the Darkith unit. Tankzone sell them, but supplies are difficult and Tankzone can be a pain at times.
The BSU unit at 40 euro's means that you have to buy an RX18 board (£23), HL Apple (£13), and the BSU Unit (£40), which is a total of £76, and still less functionality than the Darkith offers.
IMHO:
If you are looking to go Tamiya battling and have lots of cash either buy a Tamiya or an Elmod. If you are on a budget and you are handy with a soldering iron then get an HL tank and build a Darkith unit.
...and I would love to know more about the BSU unit, any chance of posting the link??
Cheers

Re: What is needed to convert to HL IR Battleready?
actually, I'll have to take you to task on that point Rob
Sounds like to maybe need to change your emitter set up on your tiger - the tamiya TBU is not all that sensitive as it only has a single sensor sitting under a prism, where as all the rest of them (El-Mod, tankhobby and DBU) have 4 seperate detectors and have a wider field of view. The second thing to consider is that the official tamiya emitter set up is a 5mm LED in a 10mm long tube - its kind of like shining a torch at your target!
and don't even get me started on the hassle of trying to get an EGS from tankzone... >:(
Hope this helps,
Mart
The kit on the RC Command website includes the emitter LED - enlarge the pic and you'll see it.The problem is that as the missing link is in the gun, it is not possible to buy the battle system and install it in another tank. Re: What is needed to convert to HL IR Battleready?
Thanks for that Mart.. I was looking at Tankzone's description.
I am currently a sitting duck in my Tiger when battling with the Leopard. I may have to resort to some unscrupulous sensor shielding and sit my emitter nearer the outside surface of the mantle. :-[
Once I have been hit once the Elmod physics don't give me time to move before the Leopard has reloaded and is ready to fire again.
Cheers

Re: What is needed to convert to HL IR Battleready?
Damn those autoloaders >:( ! It's hardly a fair fight when the cycle time of you tank is configured to simulate some poor blighter having to heave 2ft of brass and tungsten out of a container by the floor and shove it into the breach, while your opponent's tank is configured to simulate the gunner flicking a switch and a fresh shell come wizzing out of the turret basket magazine and straight into the breach!

Hi Guys p.m. your e-mail address will send you the pdf file about the Bsu tried to down load it but to big .there are two types I will send both .found out about these from Xtradry (dieter)on Panzerketten .
