Porsche King Tiger (Waltersons)

Post by Saxondog »

To begin with this is the Waltersons King Tiger as first produced, their paintwork sucked. This is an example of why that really did not matter as most guys want a better paint job anyway. Hope you guys like this,it has been a lot of work, still much to do but here is where I am so far.

Today the weather changed and I DECIDED TO GO FOR IT! Camo from a single view of a tank is very difficult. The overhead view of this examples would be better, yet we seem to have to use what we have, and this is what I have done.

This is the most difficult thing about having only a side view, what does the view appear as from Overhead? All we can do is what we think they would have done, and hope it looks correct.

Also I painted the lower hull first, the sitting the Turret in place painted it,this works best for me.

Now for the Green, the Tamiya XF-61 is really dark, the XF-58 Olive Green is used sometimes but seems very Olive drab (us) looking to me.So I first thinned the XF-61 75/25 Then added a small amount of the XF-58. I use Pill bottles to mix in,they have a rubber air tight seal and work very well as you can shake the hell out of the mixture and ensure a good blend of colors and thinner. Alcohol is used for thinner.(Thanks Steiner)

The first try and a decent match as far as I can tell.

Still much work to do,but the basic concept of this scheme is complete, the Floor polish/Matte base coat will add depth and change the tone. If more color or strips are needed they can be added later. The sealing the Floor polish mixture creates still allows other coloring or methods like washes to be added. Now for some over night drying,I did allow a full Hour or more between colors as a dry time. The Alcohol does evaporate fast drying the paint quickly.

Thanks Ken, You set the level of skill, I had the benefit f watching your Porsche develop, I just hope once the clear matte is added it's not to dark? We shall see, waiting to hear from Steiner,Oz AND Mainly Dietrich as it is his Tank.

So I have now the terrible weather to worry with,Sunday was cold, around 40 deg. today 70 deg. and just started raining heavy,by the time the paint is good and dry it may be freezing again. Memphis weather is very unpredictable, but hopefully this project can be completed before the FEB.Ice storms start and the 10deg below wind chill, still much to do,lower hull, wheels, back plate and barrel.

cheers for now

First coating of sealer,50/50 Johnsons klear polish and Tamiya x20 Flat Base, this has been a very stable sealer that Steiner suggested. Their is an article about the different names this product is sold under based on the Country. Here is the link an a few pictures.
