Changing joystick function

Post by Yanneman »

I have a Tiger with RX 18 board . I'm not satisfied with the function of the joysticks. The neutral position is very hard to set with the trim. One motor is always slightly running no matter how I fiddle the trim (The engine sound is almost never on idle when the tank is still).

Is it possible to rewire the joysticks so I get the left joysticks vertical movement to drive the left engine and the right joysticks vertical movement to run the right engine? The turret rotation should go on the right joysticks horizontal movement and the guns up and down on the left joysticks horizontal movement. I have disabled smoke- and bbgun-functions so I don't need to rewire those but maybe others can use info on rewiring those functions.

Is there a friendly soul out there who can help? Having the tank engines running with 2 joysticks would make it more realistic as I then can control each track individually, trim each joystick individually and hopefully avoid the sudden jerks that I experience as it is now.

I had the same thing with my boys tanks..3 hand sets were tryed all with diff crystals. But no good. I worked out the fact is was in the main Rx18 board. Some how,how they set the neutral point wasn't working as it should.
It also effected the mg on mine as when the trims got close to remove the movement not needed. Then the mg wouldn't sound any more. Any way a new board was fited it and is still working just fine.

Not certain if it possible to change the controls so one stick does one track and the other stick does the other track as the electronics are receiver controls for one stick operation.

If you get some WSM tank electronics that will give you left and right stick controls for the tracks, but then rest of the functions are by buttons on the top of the remote.

Having both types of controls I prefer the Heng Long with all the direction control on one stick.

Hi there buddy well I have a heng long tiger and I dident like the controls !! Having raced Rc buggys for a lot of years I'm used to the steering on the wright and the throttle on the left!! . Now on here in the tips and tricks bit there's a thread that shows you how to change your transmitter so the steering  on the wright on the throttles on the left!! I've done this mod and beleve me it's ten times beter to control now!! As for having each track working on the left and wright sticks well that's just not possible on the heng long system as the controls are set on the on pot :( now if you do change it to throttle wright stick and steering left stick ! The thread on here is wrong !! You do every thing it says but!! Do not change the wires on the main board this makes no difference! And you will have to swap you motor wires around for the mod to work!!! If you have any probs just bob me a message and I'd be glad to help!!

Hi Tm
That mod will not help him out, its a nice mod to do. If you run a Tamiya and a Hl. Then go for this mod it helps no end. What you are getting with your tank is all down to the cheap esc on the Rx18. So unless you can fiddle with that stuff on the board. Its going to be a new board needed.

Thanks for all your input. I bought the Tiger in August but I guess I've forfeited the guarantee as I have opened the tank and ripped out the smoke generator, mounted a splash guard to protect the electronics from the grease I put in the gears and other slight modifications. It seems that the RX 18 is a very vulnerable component, probably it's developing strange behaviour of its own due to overheating. So, a new board, this time with heatsink and perhaps a small fan to get some ventilation inside. But it's never to late to give up!

Chin up you have had a bit of bad luck but with a new board it should be fine! I've had no probs with mine so far! But I have looked into other options like tamiya DMD and there control unit and the El mod but these all cost around about £250 and then you would still have to get a transmiter to work them and a reciver!!! So for now the RX 18 is the best option !!!
