good morning chaps,

i have been into rc for a few years now, mainly rc helis and planes, i want to get into tanks as i was a crew commander in the british army on formation recce vehicles cvrt, unfortunatly they wouldnt let me take the company car with me.
i want to scratch build a tank , well i want to source a hull with all the running gear and tracks and build the rest myself. any help on where to look would be great.

Depends on a few things, 1/8 will be larger so easier to create but will take up a lot of space etc. 1/16 is a popular size with lots of parts readily available.

1/8th scale is do-able but not a common scale. I am working on a Merkava in this scale and have done a lot of research into available parts and materials. The biggest stumbling block for any scratch built project will be the tracks and drive sprockets and the good news for you is that there are plenty of options. I ended up getting tracks from Kenny Kong http://www.kennysmodeltank.com/page/acc ... page1.html but made everything else with limited equipment and resources.
Hulls are easy to build, but consider materials carefully, I work in 2 and 3mm aluminium which means a slow build. MDF however is easy to work with and therefore a far quicker build.

Hi Pipkin.

Welcome to the forum.
Bigger is better, but you will be needing space?

First you will need a bigger house for it to live in.

Then a bigger car to take it for days out, that is when you go to play with friends.

I do have 1/16th scale models, easy to store and transport.

Plus a few 1/6th scale models, great fun when out to play with all the other grown up children.

Final thought! If you play at home, big tanks can make a mess of the garden.

welcome to the great world of tanks. I'd see if you can get a cheapie off of flea bay. Not that hard to build from scratch including all the running though. use your money to buy metal tracks and bogies and such, just build a body.
