Motors won't run

Post by mini_bolo »

The motors on my Panther just stopped working. It's worked fine every time I have played with it, until today. The sound, turret, gun, smoke, and lights all still work properly. All the electrical connections seem solid, and there's nothing blocking the gears. Just to be sure, I charged the battery, but it didn't help. Any ideas?

Do you have a volt meter?

Take the motors out. connect one at a time to a battery direct (use wires from the battery to the motor terminals, That way removes the wires beeing used by HL). If the motor spins up ,look at the connections etc. If they don't turn then new motors are needed.

I guess the electronics have failed, unlikely both motors die at same time.

Mini_Bolo if you can't find a voltmeter plug your smoke unit into the motor plugs if the smoker works then likley motor, if smoker does nothing the RX18 is at fault.

Another thought is the electronics might of got wet (if using outside) as weather has been damp recently. If you think so put in airing cupboard overnight to dry out.

While running did you stall the tank yet continue to attempt to drive it? See the amps had to increase alot to fry the RX18, so the odd thing is everything else works, the transmitter would not be the issue if everything else works, the motors are both not working, they have not failed, this would be very unlikely.

So the RX18 must be at fault, a normal load from the motors is around 3amps max, a stalled motor can spike to much higher burning out the RX18 drive fets due to amp overload.

Everything else would still work, but both motors would fail, disassemble the RX18,look under the sockets where the motor leads install,a burnt contact at this sight would confirm this is the problem.

Also note the RX18 with a cooling fan modification on this sight will help prevent this issue. The more air moving through the unit keeps it cool allowing the motors to pull more amps without burnout.

Hope this helps. If you need a new board Steve @ Welshdragon can provide a replacement.

I checked the motors, and they do run when disconnected from the board. I'm thinking the board is at fault, though I wasn't able to find any burnt contacts on the board. Thanks for your help.
