Hello- Where do I start?

Post by littlewilli »

stubbled upon a Heng Long tiger 1 sitting neglected in a Maplin store, (just could get over the size of the thing). Dragged it home a a birthday present for my primary school age son.Didn't take long for the build quality to show up, and it now laid up awaiting me assembling the right tools to relay the tracks and reattach a sprockets A quick search of the internet made (first time I saw RTR mentioned in a forum I thought it might stand for Royal Tank Regiment :{ ) me realise how big the hobby was and how litlle I knew. My modelling skills was decades old, and have only just started to make static kits with my son. I do want to go down the mdding route, but my electrical skill is zero, and think I need more experiance with static kits with my son, before we turn to modding "our" tank.

So my question is, what decent RTR IR tanks can we buy to play off against each other with. I like the idea of the forces of valor 1/24 stuff, not just having tanks , but targets too. but are they fragile?

I like the Heng long stuff, and like the idea that no matter what,the parts to keep them running will prob be available, where as that may not be the case with the forces of valor stuff, but there is may mean they are difficult to use in the space I have available. Also the number of options is somewhat confusing (when is a Heng Long not a Heng Long , when its a Taigen, or Matomorro or Waltersons :S ).

Hi littlewilli :{
First off, let me just say welcome to the forum :wave:
I'm a Tamiya man myself so don't know too much about Heng Long or other, but sure someone will chip in soon to help you out.
Whatever way you decide to go, the main thing is to have fun.

if your going to start battling with your son I would recommend the VSX 1/72 scale, they are small and quite durable, come in a battle ready set of 2 tanks. easily played with in your house. Low cost as well. Once you have fun with them or while your playing you can research the Heng Long or Tamiya tanks and all the items you can add or upgrade. ( I don't think peeps calling it a Taigen or Walterson matters, as far as I see they are just different types of Heng Long)
I wish I would have done this, over 400 bucks and I still am not happy with my Tiger.

Really the best advice is too search through several websites and learn about the hobby, some of the stuff you can do here is awesome. Going back to my first tank I would have bought all the extras at once and just swapped standard HL parts for upgraded ones.

Hello and Welcome to the forum,I Think Freakydude has given you some sound advice,start with the small scale stuff and see if it is fun, my boys are grown but Joshua my younger son does build ships with me,and sometimes we do have a go at each other but running a course in the back yard.

The Heng Long tanks are a good purchase for battle,and are not near as expensive as Tamiya. My first was a Tiger and it is still an active tank after several years but it is highly modified.

We are here to help,and certainly have the information you seek concerning this hobby,where to buy is important so please ask before buying,and as has been said HAVING FUN is the best part of the hobby.
