Phil's Tamiya Tiger

Post by Phil »

Just picked up a second hand Tiger, I'm going to rebuild it as a mid Tiger but with the it's original roads wheels.

Got a few bits coming but I need a working drivers hatch so I can put the switch under it, can't find any, Can anyone help please?

Progress so far, it's a sort of tank blog, you can see my past tanks here as well http://www.philslittleworld.webspace.vi ... -late.html

The K sprue from Tamiya's out of production early Tiger contains the hatch internals and hinges (http://www.axels-modellbau-shop.de/kata ... :2011.html) or you can go with these metal hinges http://www.welshdragonmodels.co.uk/schu ... -106-p.asp but you won't have the hatch internals.

I used these on my tamyia tiger http://www.welshdragonmodels.co.uk/asia ... -516-p.asp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (yes i know they are HL) then aplyed the under side detailing kit that came with the tamyia ..to attach them to the hull as the holes don't line up..grind the taps flat on the hull, then screw the new covers on and file the screws level to the hull.

Thank for the links, I don't have detailing kit from the kit as it is second hand.

Looks like the hinges are the way to go as I only want to switch the tank on from the drivers hatch, but then again if later I want to add a driver...ummm I'll have to give this more thought as my budget is nearly gone!

My Tiger is slowly moving on, next plan is to put a heng long smoker in. It's been a tough build as everything was glued in place which meant cutting things off which nearly included my finger..lol

I'll look after her Steve, told my understanding wife to sleep in the shed while my Tiger tucks up beside my at night!

Some how I'm missing two vital organs, :{ can't think why?

Thanks for the offer of the bits mate.

I've managed to do a few more bits since these pics, will post some soon.

Still working out which track hangers to get, some cost a lot of money and work like the real thing, some are cheep but look like they are in the close position (without tracks) and some just look nasty!

The colour scheme is not yet worked out and as the winter is coming it's not good for spraying so I can take my time detailing her.

...well that took a long time didn't it chaps!

Back again with new pics, bit of history for those that want to know. after my eye op nearly 2 years ago now I am recovering form a detached retina which was stitched back on with a laser almost 2 months ago. Went back to work Monday and hating it!

Moving on I dug my tiger out and started modding it into a late version, this of course with after finishing some other project which can be found on this forum.

This update is taken from my website.

The next tricky step was to find some metal road wheels as the late Tiger1 didn't have the rubber tyres as in the early version. I couldn't find a Tamiya set of road wheels in fact I don't think they made any. The best solution was to by a set of metal road wheels on ebay for £20, but the axels were to small and didn't fit as the hole the suspension arm on the Tamiya was to big.

I couldn't use a bit of brass tubing as I couldn't find on thin enough, so I had an idear to use copper tape so all I had to do is roll a bit round to get the right thickness by trial and error until it fitted.

After it fitted I pealed it off and stuck it to my base board so I could cut all the strips to the right length for all the axels.

To overcome the problem of keeping the side cable on the hull I had to use brass pins to mount it onto, as when driving the Tank through bushes etc I am sure it will get ripped off. The brass pins you can see through the plastic will be filled at a later date after the finished colour has been applied.

... next up, Halfords Primer.

Followed by Tamiya dark yellow.

Below, tools added and track hangers installed on turret

Tank ready for camouflage, first green freehand tripes followed by brown. The tools will be painted the correct colour once all the airbrushing is finished.

Thats about it for now, loads more detail to paint and put on...
