first weathering atempt

Post by panzerfahrer »

here are a few pics of my Tiger, the zimmerit is a bit to heavy i think, i havnt finished the top yet, hence the tools are not painted, (i should have ground them off) and there are no markings, but saying that there were some that had the numbers and other markings painted over by the crew when they applied the cam. All comments and,( "thats wrong") are welcome, you dont learn if your not told.

the zimerit looks a little toy like however it is great! i like the way you have weathered the wheels and is a really awesome job overall (i think the zimerit only looked a bit toy like because of the lighting)

thanks for that Ice, i will remove the right one, come to think of it i have noticed a couple of tigers in photos with right hand convoy light missing but never thought anything of it, plus they are left hand drive so keeping the left light makes sense.

Thanks for the feedback Johnf, the zimmerit was a applied with my thumb, i mixed up some milliput, took a ball of it, about the size of a marble, and pressed it on to the surface as thinly as poss. then sprayed it with water and used a tool i made to form the pattern, the tool is an old brass gear removed from a motor, cut to about 5mm wide, a length of 8 gauge wire bent up to form a axle and handle , a bit like a paint roller, with the milliput very wet i pulled the roller/tool down through the milliput, as the gear rotates the teeth form the zim pattern, the milliput must be kept wet or it tend to pull off when the tool is drawn down through it, to get the rough size zim, you need to experiment with different size gears, i only had one off an old r/c car so had to use that. I will post a picture tomorrow of the tool i made, it will be obvious how to make one when you see it. or you could make the zim pattern with a screwdriver blade (very long and tedious way to do it) it took me about 2 hours to do mine with the tool.

My model room is in the loft, and your right, the lighting is poor, the zim looks ok when you are stood up driving the tank, the dirt blends in better in natural light, the soil on the wheels was made up of green scatter, used on model railways, "quite cheap", mixed with brown ready-mixed poster paint, it forms a great texture and sticks well, plus you have the added benefit of being able to wash it off should you want to change the colour scheme, applied with the finger, Quicker and easier, the idea of this scheme is the tank has driven across muddy fields and smashed through hedges, picking up dirt a foliage.

Nice Tiger and a great job of the Zimm. Its not easy applying the milliput and as you have found out weathering/painting can be pretty labour intensive. Well done.
Do you realize how much I hate this uniform and all it stands for. ( Cross of Iron )
