??? motor number.

Post by Tankbear »

Hi,

This is probaly an daft question. but when motors have a number i.e. 400 Graupner what does it mean?

I'm guessing the higher the number the better, but does it relate to a specific benchmark.

Hi Tankbear,

The number refers to the length of the motor "can" in millimetres. A 380 motor has a can 38mm in length, a 400 motor has a can 40mm in length.

Most 'proper' RC cars use 540 motors, meaning their cans are 54mm in length.

Motors like the 380s and 400s tend to share identical "mounting arrangements"; that is to say you can generally bolt a 400 motor straight in to the hole a 380 came out of but if you made a bigger move to something like a 540 you'd find it simply didn't fit. If you make a large leap in can length you also find an increase in can diameter as well.

Hope this helps

Shaft Size changes as the can size changes as well, the Gruapner Speed 400 race motors were a good upgrade,a little better torque but they seem to be having issues.I paid 8.99each from Hobby Lobby International here in Tenn. But their are some other sites offering stronger motors of the 400 range and shaft size.

Also in the download section their is the gearing calculator with technical information and the effect of different gear box, motor and pinion gear changes.

I noticed a lot of people here talk about the Graupner 400, but when I was looking on the RCtankwars website their sell Promax 400 & 480 motors. So it got me thinking if I could directly compare the two.

I not sure why Gruapner are no longer sold,Phil did carry them then had to replace them with Promax. Be clear about the 480,their not for the H/L Tanks, require alteration and have a 3.2mm shaft compared to the 2.3mm shaft of the 400 motors.

Hi Tankbear, :~
Saxondog is right the 400 motor is a straight swap. Same shaft diameter, same mounting hole position, (he should know he has them in his Tiger 1 :haha: ). ....BUT the 480 has a larger shaft diameterof 3.2 MM, different mounting holes and you will have to buy a larger drive pinion gear as they are NOT made in 10 teeth with the VITAL >46< Pitch. Tamiya and Heng Long both use 46 PITCH gears, anything other than the 46 will NOT work as it does not mesh correctly with the other gears. You can get a 480 to fit BUT....you will need to modify the gearbox side plates so that the motor can be moved 'away' from the first gear to make allowance for the larger pinion.
Graupner 400 motors can be got here....just remember that you want the 7.2 Volt version .....

ETO sells a 480 motor that uses the same shaft size and mounting arrangement as the standard motors.
I have them installed on 3:1 boxes in my ElMod HL KV-1, lots of power.
