Quick motor upgrade question

Post by emoose »

Got a Heng Long Tiger that I'm thinking of slowly upgrading,

When it comes to swapping motors what size pinion gear should I be getting, most motors don't come with one and the existing motors don't have a grub screw for releasing the pinion.

Or do I just need to be braver and give the pinion a good pull with some pliers? :D

I think you will find they are heat shrunk on, you will need to get them very hot before you try to pull them off, if you are not keeping the old motors, then it doesn't mater if you damage the armatures from excessive heat, once hot they will pull off easily, heat them back up and push them on to the new motor shafts and let them cool, job done. Oh and make sure the output shafts on the new motors are the same diameter as the old ones, measure them with a micrometer or vernier.

Your safest bet is to get a pinion puller. They are pressed on, a pliers will damage the pinion... They also make a press for putting the pinions back on..

By series 400 motors,as far as pinion gear selection their is a pinion calculator on this forum that is very detailed.Including motor type, gearbox selection and pinion slection. The calculator is in the download section and works very well. You will be able to determine speed, torque, using different pinion sizes. Also remember 400 series are 2.3mm shaft but as motor size increases so does the shaft size, the 400n work best and will not damage the RX18 by pulling to many amps.

Fan cooling the RX18 is another good idea and does extend the life of the RX18 unit.

Hi, :~
Check that the actual shaft diameter of your new motor is the same as your old one. The Heng Long motors are 2.3MM in diameter and so are some of the more powerful motors such as the 'Graupner 400' which is a good motor £6.49 each from

I went up to a Graupner 480 and this motor has a 3.17MM shaft which was harder to get a pinion for.
Regarding removing of the old pinion...it is relatively easy without destroying the old motor....If you have a small vice then position it so that the pinion is above the jaws and the motor is suspended in the 'Air' the drive shaft can the gently be taped with a small hammer until the end of the shaft is flush with the pinion. Then use a drift that is say 2MM in diameter and gently tap the shaft out of the pinion. The pinion can then be fitted onto the new motor by resting the base of the new shaft on a piece of aluminium on a steel surface. The pinion can then be taped onto the drive end of the new motor until it is flush then use say a very small socket or a steel tube to knock the pinion down to the correct position.
It may be easier to simply buy new pinions that have a grub-screw so that you can simply attach the gear with a small allen key which will save all the bother in the future. Just make sure that they are 48 Pitch Teeth or they will NOT work correctly with Heng Long or Tamiya gears.

Being a R/C heli flyer as well myself, and all the others, constantly tinker with pinion sizes. Most R/C heli shops offer a range of different sized pinions, available for all differing output shaft sizes. The best bit is they secure via a grub screw. Just remember the thread lock!

Brilliant, thanks for all the info.
Just finished wearing in the metal gearbox, amazing the difference it makes, with some cutting compound, now I can look at getting a pair of Graupners!

Hi Emoose, :~
I agree with what Jackeb says ....BUT....You MUST watch the PITCH and make certian that it is > 46 < I have 2 beautifully made pinion gears that I bought from a Helicopter seller on Ebay. 10 Teeth Exactly what I needed. Fitted the motor shafts and looked great.......BUT......when I started the motors the racket was terrible !! So I looked at the gear mesh and you could actually see that the teeth were being 'Forced' into fitting as they rotated. They were the wrong pitch and alot of Helicopter gears are NOT 46.....so if it doesn't say 46, then ask BEFORE you buy !
