Tornado warning,sighting

Post by Saxondog »

Another day of Tornados, we could see the funnel and my son called and has it on video, about 8 miles from my front door we have just cleaned up the mess from last nights storm, and more is on the way. But my family is safe and many people are in terrible shape from the destruction, I'm posting this link so if anyone wants to see the live views of these monsters here is our local Doplar weather Radar station. Saxondog, Pray for the people who have lost everything.

The radar here is very accurate but knowing your going to be hit helps but nothing can withstand these winds, the record from the Storm two days ago is 195MPH Straight Line Winds, Baseball sized hail, And the Mississippi has widened to 3miles wide here at Memphis,3 feet from the top of the levy.

Hi Sax,

I saw this on the news last night with Obama visiting areas that have been destroyed, but different of course if you know of somebody who has to live with it and the potential aftermath of a hit. We went to the Norfolk Coast today which is roughly 70 miles from where we live in Cambridgeshire and the wind was a bit fresh, but 195mph!! Crikey that's unbelievable.Take care, keep safe and hope it blows itself out soon, or whatever tornadoes do. Meterology was never a strong point of mine.

I was looking at the link you provided to get a sense of what was happening at the moment. Blimey let's hope it changes course or decides not to touch down and create a twister. As you can tell weather was not a strong point. Geography and modern history yes as that is what I did my degree in before joining the armed forces, but atmospherics and weather a big no.

The radar works very well, they can even tell which streets are effected, the neighborhoods and the total mass of the cells. Now dead clam, birds singing, storm has moved past Memphis heading North-East at 65MPH on the front edge. As you saw on the imaging these things are very long (north to south) but at times only a few miles wide, last week the front from North to South was 1000 miles long and at the widest point 240 miles West to east.

They always seem to move the same way from the South West (Gulf of Mexico/Texas) heading through Texas,Oklahoma, then Arkansas,Tennessee or Louisiana,Alabama,Georgia,Florida, ending up on the East coast in the Carolina's. The they head into the Atlantic to be recycled back into the gulf,or head North and become a Northern/Eastern storm at sea.

Thanks everyone, were fine the only problems now are the flooding and roads closing. And the travellers that think their driving a submarine and are getting stuck,or worse just trying to drive to fast and crashing other from their wakes, and splashing cars passing the other direction, really stupid people. But my family and our friends and neighbour are all safe.
We have more rain today and travel to the west is difficult the Mississippi has been approaching flood stage and beyond, their are discusions of closing the Interstate 40 bridge, the largest and main route across the river. But flooding on the west side is very bad and may get worse yet as water from the Northern states comes down river toward Memphis, the Corp.of Army Engineers control the levee system, they are blasting some levies to release water into un flooded area's to relieve the flooding down river.

Here is a link to the local news, their is a window with many pictures of the flooding, the river is at 54feet,double the normal depth.

First let me say I and my family are fine, worried but ok. We have spent several nights in the past three weeks in the hallway, but that is what you do in these storms. Many though have lost everything, and I mean everything.

We are ready,my neighbour Matt and his pals have parked a pontoon party boat in his driveway,so at least we can be comfortable, if the levee breaks. They have just reported St= Louis has reached 60 feet, that is way over flood stage. The levies were designed for 60 feet but they were built in the 30's-40's and it has been 25 years since they have been under this much pressure.

Brings new meaning to Led Zeppelin's Robert Plant singing when the levee breaks, especially considering they recorded Zeppelin Three here in Memphis. More rain coming but so far no more super cells, the hood of my truck looks like the surface of the moon, hail damage. Still guy's were safe, have power and have the food supplies to make it through this mess. Many, many people are homeless, with nothing.

No personal processions period. You will get this on the networks, but the news link I posted is accurate. They even have a live link to the Camera's on the 4 bridges here that cross the Mississippi. Three of these are very old with one being close to 100years old.the two oldest are used for Rail traffic only. Surprise FOX just talked about us here. The newest Bridge is 30 years old and the largest with 12 lanes of traffic.

Pray for people as they are hurting, and the outpouring of supplies really tell's about how people care, and how close we are as a people. I will update the post as things progress,if we could have a few dry days the river moves fast and the pressure on the levies would lesson alot. Thanks everyone for the well wishes, God help us all,Blake
