1/6 Scale Cromwell

Post by dylan9391 »

I am not sure if anybody would be interested but I am considering taking moulds off my large Cromwell for the benefit of others. It's going to be a two part fibreglass hull, with perhaps a one piece turret. This is to allow ease of access for radio control and detailing etc. it's not a kit as such, but parts to enable the model maker to make a tank in the larger scale. I've not thought of cost, or anything like that, I am just asking the question at the moment.

Dont you think glass fibre will be to light and prone to cracking.

The Top deck of my Tiger is an aluminium plate with fibre glass wrap, but the same could be done using Plasticard as a base to allow the fibre glass to have a support, the sides maybe the same type of building technique?

Seems like a task for sure but many would line up for a kit,or a sub kit.

The thinking was to build the inners with wooden formers and then make the uppers out of quite thick fibreglass a bit like Mk1 tanks Russian models. I've made a 1/6 scale moulds for the Hetzer top and bottom, but it's on the slight backburner at the moment, with the big aeroplane. When that's done I'll take a mould off my pattern and see if it works. Thanks for the advice though. Great

Hi Sax,

I was talking to a supplier today and I mentioned the tank and different ways of making it. Cutting a long story short using my drawings for a basic hull and turret he can cnc cut a selection of plywood parts in either 9, or 12mm for the Cromwell in the 1/6 size. It wouldn't be a kit as such, but it would enable the scratchbuilder to have enough basic parts to make one of these popular tanks. Hull sides, top and bottom and few extras including the turret. No idea of cost, but I am sure it would be cheaper to put together than the fibreglass Comet model I saw recently on the internet.

I can ask him how much it would cost if there was the interest?

What do you think?
