Canadian M4A3E8 build

Post by Fireman Tim »

I built this tank last summer using a Tamiya M4 Sherman and a Mato Sherman turret with Nick Aguilar barrel and muzzle break. My objective was to build a replica of 'Catherine', a M4A3E8 tank that served in Korea and was manned by the Canadian zipperheads of Lord Strathcona's Horse.

Mating the turret to the tamiya was not that difficult and worked out very well. Here are some pics of the build:

Modifications to the Tamiya rear deck.

Exhaust diffuser (I believe that is what it is called)

Modified one of the Mato turret hatches with the tamiya one.

Tamiya turret ring installed on the Mato turret.

Here she is all painted. I have since installed a canvas mantlet dust cover.

She is probably my favorite tank. My wife's name is Catherine too... which probably softened the blow when I told her how much it cost to build. :haha:

Very nice well built tank. I would love to see more of the "in progress" pics of it.

More pics, ok!

This build was pure 100% fun. I could not stop giggling the whole time (good thing I was down in the basement).

I am actually gifted at figure painting. If you're interested I could make it look as great as the rest of your conversion.. LOL P.S. If you're selling the rest of the VVSS suspension I would be willing to purchase it from you being I am converting the Tamiya M4 to a Sherman Firefly.
A Commander has to make vital decision on incomplete information in a matter of seconds, and afterwards the experts can sit down at leisure, with all the facts before them, and argue about what he might, could or should have done.- Sir William Slim
