Video Camera in TigerI

Post by grompix »

Hiding a miniature CMOS pinhole video camera in a tank model.

I've had tiny wireless CMOS video cameras in some of my tanks for a few years now and it is a lot of fun to drive around looking at the world from a miniature tank commander's viewpoint. It becomes a real blast when you have an opponent with similar kit built into his tank. All of a sudden, stalking your opponent from cover, remaining out of sight until you are ready to fire and skilful use of camouflage are much more involving than the normal RC tank battles where each participant can oversee the battlefield from a helicopter viewpoint.

Up until recently however, anyone wanting to do all this has had a real problem, because wireless video cameras only came in 4 frequencies (channels). Which meant of course, that only four RC tank models could take part at the same time. That's kind of OK, but it would be much better if you could get a hold of a wireless video system with more than 4 frequencies. Well, you can now.

The Chinese electronics industry (don't we just love them!) has come up with a 15 channel audio video transmitter the size of a largish matchbox (see pic). These are about the £40 mark (or were before the pound started dropping through the floorboards!). They come with the miniature transmitter and a receiver to pick up the signals and all the cables you need to connect to just about anything. You can switch between the 15 channels just by pushing a button on the two devices. Of course you need a miniature video camera to connect to your transmitter but these can be bought for less than £10 on e-bay and usually come with a built-in miniature microphone too.

And you'll need some sort of screen to display the wireless video feeds. You can buy small tv/video monitor for this on e-bay (they usually retail at £20+ ). You can even use one of the cheap baby-monitors instead, or a laptop if you have access to one.

Here's a clip I've put together of my Tiger. The camera is fitted into the chest of the loader who is standing in the turret hatch. The reception isn't too good because I recorded the video feed from our computer room (spare bedroom) at the front of the house and the tank was running out in the back garden.

I've got three of these video transmitters and I'm hoping to add them to more of my RC models. I'm thinking of trying to make at least one into a "universal" module which can be placed on any tank, perhaps disguised as boxes and stowage. I'll post the results on this forum if it works out.

Cheers
Chris

hi chris, i love it, especially where you put the camera(genius), i will be getting one someday, when funds allow, i have been told you can get these in 2.4ghz, so no need for channels, i cant be 100% on that, will dig around and let you know what i find

Hi Tony.
Very glad you like it. ;D
Yeah, all the cheap wireless cameras and transmitters come in two frequency flavours, 2.4 GHz and 1.2 GHz. Mine are all 1.2 GHz because I've found that my Spekrum radios can interfere with 2.4 GHz video signals at close range.
The cheap all-in-one camera/transmitters only have 4 frequencies. Even though they are on the same 2.4 GHz frequency as the Spektrum and similar RC transmitters they don't use the same model identification system so the max number of channels remains as 4.
This new(ish) Chinese transmitter that I use has 15 channels and you can manually select the one you want using push buttons on the little transmitter and the receiver. They also do a 12 channel one in 2.4 Ghz which is even smaller.
So, with a mixture of the two types of transmitters it would be possible to battle with 27 tanks!!!!! Just imagine that!  :o :o
Cheers
Chris

I know what you mean Pete. I've got the same problem with some of my Tanks. Even my Tamiya Tiger is a bit pushed for space so I'm thinking of putting all the camera electronics inside the speaker box. I think a 'universal' wireless camera setup would be a good thing to try because it would be theoretically possible to put it on the back of any tank. It could be disguised as stowage boxes, blanket rolls, fuel cans and such like. Then they could be handed out during battle days to people who want to have a go but don't have the system yet. Just mulling over the possibilities!
As you say Tony, Battle of the Bulge here we come!!!

I looked at doing this, and even had a set up once attached to a loco on a model railway that I had, the effect was brilliant..watching all of the scenery and other trains passing by. The cam only requires 9v, so I just hooked one up to a battery and hid it.

I was doing ok with the tank version until I decided to get clever and take the camera apart to make the CMOS chip even smaller, at which point I gave up. I have the transmitter, but I can't buy one of those spycams on its own anywhere, and I don't really want to pay out for a whole new set up just to get the camera.

Does anyone know where I can buy a spycam cheap on its own??

Cheers

Hi Rob

You can get spy-cams on e-bay. Just be careful that you get one without the built-in wireless as you've already got the transmitter. They're about £8-£12 (although they can be more expensive for extra features like infra-red and sound).
Searching for "CCTV pinhole camera -wireless" on Ebay should give you quite a lot of results.

This one:-

seems as good as any.

Hope this helps
Regards
Chris ;D
