Making molds

Post by Rogue Sub »

In my other hobby I am continuously making molds, fabricating parts, and casting. We see articles all the time on how to do this and that but I have yet to find one here.

My question to all of you is...

Would you guys find an article on casting and reproducing your own parts helpful?
All I need is a tank that can dive like a sub and shoot torpedoes.

I have done quite a bit of this work also so may be able to add to the topic also. I have worked on both White metal and resin.

I would like to see that too. I want to duplicate some Jerry cans and ammo boxes, is there a minimum size?

Thats spooky ! Only a couple of days ago I was thinking about buying a resin mould set but not knowing what it entailed and what I would need, I put it off. It would be a great addition as far as I'm concerned, so yes please.

You need to find supplier of room temperature vulcanising rubber. I buy by kilo. Comes as a 2 part mix, rubber and hardener. I have a local Irish but do not know if they ship. Resin available from same supplier again comes as 2 part mix and hardens in seconds. Apart from rubbers resin and White metal you just need some Lego bricks plastiscene and patience. I have moulded very small items with perfect detail. I have pictures of my 1/100 panzer division which was cast in resin and White metal.
Main thing to remember is you need to be moulding something that you will use in large quanties otherwise not worth the cost of materials. I was going to copy some parts for my own use but I only have limited use for the parts.

Looking forward to seeing this and other peoples methods.

Just on this subject and to be honest I hate to raise the matter but probably should.
I have always wondered is it illegal to take a mold off someone elses product to reproduce
and therefore duplicate their item? In this day an age when you can download almost anything
I am probably being a bit corny here!

I ask the question because I simply respect that someone has gone to a lot of effort to produce
an item which has been copied and they get no reward for their efforts!

Keeping in mind this is just my hobby, the end result is not sold it would be for personal use only!

For own use it's ok. I think a lot of the so called upgrades are just copied from the plastic anyway. Plus resin, metal and rubber is quite expensive. Either you make somthing you want in large quantities or make to sell. Not cost effective to make small quantities. I made a full metal roman cohort. About 500 troops plus support troops.
