HL metal gearbox

Post by DerStiervonScapaFlow »

Anybody had problems with Heng Long metal gearboxes? I think one of mine is about to strip, is it worth doing anything to repair these or sould I just bin them? Will brass gearboxes be any better? Tiger hasn't even used a 2nd battery charge yet.

Hmmm...does not sound right there at all....have you had them long?...I mean, that they should last alot longer than 2 bat charges....have you been using them on grass, have you got metal tracks?.....something wrong there

Yeah metal tracked pro version, mostly been used on hardwood flooring, flagstone flooring, and a small run over a chipped drive way and once around the front lawn, admittedly it did take a bit of power to do 90 degree turns on the grass. First noticed it inside the house when every now and then the left side would lock and you had to use the oposite motion to free up again. Maybe had around an hours use altogether. When tracking forward slowly you can notice the tank taking minute stops and surging forward again like it's maybe lost a few teeth off a cog???

Take off the top of the tank, obviously check for stripped teeth, but also check that if there are small allen key headed grub screws that are not loose....on the 3:1 gears i bought, i found that the small cog on the shaft that goes to the drive wheel had worked loose....not saying that you have the same thing, but it is something...there is a flat part on the drive shaft that the screw tightens against....i found that i had a similar drive problem, it would catch now and again..

Nics advice is good, if you open the tank up try running the gearboxes without the tracks and use a compound to "run in " the gear boxes. Some use cam grinding compound for this purpose, others have used tooth paste. But the point is to allow the gears to mesh and wear down slightly any imperfections in the gears. XRAD first posted this process in his build thread, here is a link to that thread.

It seems like the last 2 gears have stripped

Now I'm wondering if these have worn prematurely due to the crap chinese tolerances? would new gears last?
how long would a gearbox be expected to last? brass any better?

heres a little video of the gearbox running

hi kev
if you run the white metal gears on grass with metal tracks on you will strip them when you change the boxes over to the new base i sent you did you not see the wear on the gears this would indicate that they were ok until you ran it on the grass i will send out the new gears that you need but with heavy use they will wear again you may want to upgrade to asiatam boxes they will take a lot of punishment
thanks dave

Cheers Dave. Could the box wear out on grass with only 4 turns? Surely plastic boxes would be better than that?

yes they will if you put them under strain its only white metal so it is soft a 90 degree turn on grass with metal tracks on will wear them out running back and fourth they may last longer as for plastic no good at all if you are going to run your tank out doors you will need a more tougher gear box
