i was going to get tamiya spray primer but i have bought an airbrush kit that should come in a few days along with my pershing tank and i dont really want to spray from the can into the primer resevoir thing.

i was wondering is their a primer paint that i can just use straight away without thinning with my airbrush? or is it best to just use normal tamiya spray can primer?

Hi and my 2 cents:

I like to use the Tamiya spray can paints for the primer steps. From the cans, I spray 3 or 4 very light coats to get good coverage. For a model that you run and enjoy, you need a good tough surface for further paint layers to sit on and avoid paint chipping.

A true statement for 1/35 armor models, but not so true at 1/16 scale: it is a myth to worry about spray can paint build up obliterating the models fine plastic details if you spray several light coats of paint. I also use Tamiya spray can paint to put down a base color prior to any camo and or weathering.

The spray can primers I like (1 can of each):
1. Tamiya Undercoating for All Metal Parts (hull and barrel)
2. Tamiya Fine Surface Primer for Plastic and Metal Parts
3. Appropriate spray can paint base color

Here is a quick overview of the paint steps used for my Tamiya Jagdpanther, built for TBU fighting. I use water based artist acrylic paint for the pioneer tools and other details.

So, a combination of spray cans, airbrush and paint brush works for me. I usually seal my final paint with a dull clear finish, any color shift just adds to the weathering effects, but the main purpose of a dull flat final finish is that all your paint effects and any decal work will appear to be on the same surface.

Also avoid painting on damp, rainy or cold days, which might be tough to do in the UK.

Hiya, I use Halfords undercoat paints and they work really well, both the grey ( I use under dunkelgelb) or thier version of the red ocre undercoat which I use under greys or any other darker colours.

the simoniz stuff is pretty good its quite fine for a car primer almost as fine as tamiyas primer i use the tamiya grey to pick out imperfections on a tank/part , before a light sand and the simoniz red oxide as a primer

Cant i just use tamiya primer for metal & plastic on both metal and plastic parts? rather than having to buy the metal primer?
i dont quite get why they even make a metal primer when they make a primer for both?

Answer is yes. That is what I did with my Jagd 2 years ago and no problems. The metal only primer is just tougher stuff.
