Late Tiger 1 Engine Plates........

Post by Dietrich »

Hi Guys, :~
I am building a very late version Tiger 1, post sept 1944 ( so no need for any Zim :haha: ) I am certain that I have seen a photograph of the rear deck that shows all the ventilation grills covered with solid metal plates which are mounted on 'Stand-Off' legs or plinths which give a large enough gap to still allow the cooling air to be drawn in ( and exited ) around the edges ! but probably mounted to protect the radiators etc from air attack !
Unfortunately I cannot now find this picture......has anyone got it or can they point me in the right direction, it may have been a 'Field Mod' so it may be a rare picture.
Many Thanks in advance, :~

Seen them on late Panthers (Welsh dragon sells the kits) but can't say I've seen them on a Tiger. I'm sure someone has a photo somewhere to prove me wrong though.

I remember seeing a photo in a book, maybe Tigers in Action or a similar publication. I will see if I can find a copy of that picture and send it to you.

Hi Guys, :~
Thank you for the replies and for searching for pictures. :D Yes I do mean like the rear ones on the King Tiger, BUT,they covered the two large vents near to the turret on the Tiger 1 and I seem to remember that it actually covered ALL 4 of the vents to leave a completely armoured rear deck. They were simply large sheets of steel sat on' legs'.
Regards, :~

I saw exactly what you are describing on a Tiger 1in the last couple of months.
I came across it during an internet search. It was called a 'Belin Tiger' and featured a beat up early tiger that was refurbished to late war spec - including the wooden anti shrapnel shields on its engine deck.
I seem to remember it was a static model.

I will try to see if i still have the link or a saved picture for you....

Didn't woz do a version of this tank? I'm sure thinking about it, I can remember a tiger with rusty protective plates over the vents????

Yes it was Woz's Tiger that I was thinking about- but I am sure that there was another on the Finescale modeler site a couple of months ago....
