From HL electronics to Tamiya in a Heng Long?
From HL electronics to Tamiya in a Heng Long?
I didn't know if I should post this in the Heng Long department or in this department, but I choose the Tamiya department. If the moderator should think otherwise, he's free to move this thread to ghe Heng Long department.
This project is planned a year from now or so, but eventually I plan on replacing the Heng Long electronics in my Heng Long Pz IV chassie with the one from either El-mod or Tamiya, and I just wanted know from the more experienced ones in this forum what they think of this idea. The gearboxes in the Pz IV chassie are stabilized with a metal plate in the bottom and are running well, so I'll keep those.
But apart from that the dimensions in the Pz IV chassie should be the same as in the Tamiya Pz IV, or so I assume.
Could I for example fit the Tamiya DMD units and the Tamiya loudspeaker intended for the Pz IV chassie in the Heng Long Pz IV chassie.
As I wrote in the beginning, this is a project that I'd like to start with some time next year or so, when I know more and have the time to plan the change of electronics.
Cheers, Jens

Here for example...
http://www.tankzone.co.uk/cart/tam_accessories.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
...you can buy seperate electronic parts for the Tamiya tanks, however only for the Tiger I or the King Tiger.
There must be other parts like it suitable for the Pz IV?
Cheers, Jens

Hi Jens,
I did exactly the same thing last year.
Here is the build:-

I thought about doing this but using the new Asiatam Stug IV upper hull on a Tamiya Panzer IV lower. It is possible, if you can grab the Tamiya electronics for a good price as well, definitely worth it.

Just as I thought then, it is possible.
Does anybody know where to find the electronic components? The cables can always be soldered on, so they are no problem.

Re: From HL electronics to Tamiya in a Heng Long?
This is what the interior looks like in my HL Pz IV chassie. The battery box is cut away and its hatch permanently glued to the lower chassie, I've also watertightened the lower chassie by applying it with glassfibre putty and paint.
As I wrote, I intend to keep the gearboxes, since they run well and are screwed onto a metalplate, but the rest of the electroincs can be replaced.
How much space should the Tamiya electronic parts take up? This should be enough space to install it, shouldn't it?
Cheers, Jens

Re: From HL electronics to Tamiya in a Heng Long?
They should all fit, not sure about the speaker tho - Tams speakers are huge, but if you throw away the smoker then you should be ok. I kept the HL speaker in my M41 upgrade (the threads in the builds section somewhere)

I used the Tamiya recoil and machine gun LED, so that I did not have to worry about getting the connectors. The HL speaker will plug into the MFU ok, for the gun elevation and turret traverse I used some spare computer fan cable connectors:

Hope this helps,
Mart

Re: From HL electronics to Tamiya in a Heng Long?
Hi Mart,
thanks for the pics, it should all fit. If the Tamiya loudspeaker doesn't fit, it's not too difficult to buy a similar one with the same sound quality.
As I wrote in the beginning of this thread, this is a project in planning and will most likely happen some time next year.
Thanks for all the nice answers! :~

The Tamiya speakers are way too big, unessersarily so. They say the box improves the sound, but I don't think it does.
I always cut them down in my Tamiya's to make space for other things. The sound is never affected.
In my Tiger, I swapped the speaker for a Visaton FRS 7;

This was a much nicer sound.

Re: From HL electronics to Tamiya in a Heng Long?
Hi Guys,
Rather than start a whole ne thread i thought i'd ask a further question on this. I've managed to fry my HL electronics and have managed to pick up the tamiya dmd, mf unit and speaker for a very good price. One thing this thread doesn't quite cover is whether or not the HL turret and elevation units will work fine with the tamiya controls? is it the case that as long as you can marry it up with connectors it will work?
