Quick cast armour effect.

Post by Woz »

I was just trying out different ways to get a cast armour effect on my Pershing and tried this.

Lightly sand then stipple cellulose thinners onto a small area that you want to change (approx 1" x 1") with a stiff short haired brush. Keep stippling until the thinners evoporates and you end up with this-

H&S warning - wear a mask and do it in a well ventilated area beacause it'll have the same effect on your brain cells.

Nice tip  ive seen a simular process done on painted surfaces to obtain a flaking paint effect, the paint is left to react with the thinners and eventualy lifts away from the surface. I think i saw it on a model of a DH mosquito, it looked wicked, showing to wooden construction under the paint.

If you spray coat a second coat about 30 minutes to and hour after the first coat you get about the same effect. Don't let the first coat dry all the way.

I found something similiar for cloth helmet covers on 1/16 scale crew figures. Paint the helmet in a base colour then after about an hour paint it again with liquid polystyrene cement. you can be quite generous with it. After a little whilt the paint lifts and wrinkles. Leave it to go off and then when you paint the camouflage colours over this it looks like a cloth helmet cover. Surprisinglly realistic.
