Rock steady lower hulls....

Post by majordisastor »

Hi everyone,

Here is a twist on another Heng Long Tamiya question for you.

I want to build a Tiger 1 that is capable of negotiating the great outdoors. Assuming that metal tracks and gear boxes will be employed along with up rated motors. Which build would have a stronger Hull?
An Asiatam running metal wheels or Tamiya standard metal deck with Imapct torsion bars?

Weight is not really an issue – I would think the heavier the better.

I have seen some pretty solid Heng Long conversions among your pages but as far as I can see no super reinforced Tamiya’s. Is it because their design is more solid out of the box – or are the Tammy’s used more more gently due to their higher cost?

Over to you , pencils to paper sit up straight ……..

the tamiyas have a metal tub as standard , so the asiatam upgrade will make the hl hull on par with the tamiya, i think it would be a close call

As Ice said, the Tamiya tubs are aluminium, and have realistic suspension. The Asiatam tubs are a good approximation, and great for HL tanks.

I personally prefer the Tamiya system, as it feels a lot sturdier, and looks a lot better. It's very robust as well, I thrash my Tiger, and that weighs 14lbs! :D
Just to be sure though, I added some square brass tubes to help prevent the hull flexing.

there is another option
Dave (Forgebear) has been working on a good strong base using the std H/long base and personally i think hes got it spot on ok its std metal h/long suspension but the hull is way stronger than an asiatam or tamiya hopefully he will pop in and share them with us all
i got my mitts on one at the swindon show last year and man they are good

so the options for the tiger are wsn tiger good mid/late detailing weak gearboxes and everything else :shifty:

the tam tiger good but very pricey quite flimsy but well battle tested

your basic H/long tiger nice and cheap and the upgrades/fixes are similar to the tam but a little bit more toy like so with that a bit tougher

about £100 gets you an asiatam lower well worth the money if you want a tam alike base for your H/long lid i have one and its the best investment i made for my tiger

again all this is down to your personal preference and needs and the end result your after

just my thoughts

Kind regards Rob

hi guys. i notice rob has been talking about the heng long reinforced hulls that nigel pearce and i are working on. we reckon with the tiger 1 base, deep dished to look like the tamiya, so you have room for the electrics of your choice, heng long suspension in metal with grub screws, idler set on the rear, fully reinforced, the price will be £80. gearboxes shown on the piccie are an extra £40 (fitted) if required. cheers dave    the second piccie shows a completed heng long and gives and idea of what you can end up with after your initial purchase of the reinforced hull!

Having a Tamiya Tiger 1 myself and having seen and held one of these uprated HL hulls at the Luton meet l I know the HL hull is a lot less prone to flex than the Tamiya and the workmanship is first rate in my opinion. Hope this helps

Asiatam for me,but their was a debate on the weight of my Tank 20.8lb. But then I explained the five pounds of lead wheel weights in my hull and turret. My Asiatam hull has been trouble free after the weight was added, before it road to high and to stiff.

Wow, Thanks for the response guys. I was doodling on scrap paper a rough design for a Tamiya top and Asiatam bottom – that’s what prompted me to post this question – glad I did now.

A couple of questions for you Forgebear, what make of gear boxes would you be fitting and which idler set are you using?

Also….20lb Tiger!! That’s a serious build you have there Saxondog. It’s not something you would want to drop on your foot!!

I saw in your posts you have up rated your motors – I can see why now. Which gearbox have you fitted to pull your Tiger about?

I am looking foreward to getting my first tank – I am getting a bit tired of pushing my 1/25 Tamiya Tiger 1 about on the carpet and making Brrrrrrrrmmmmmm….noises with my lips – and the cat keeps looking at me in an odd way…

As I was mulling over the pros and cons of this on my usual commute to Bristol I was passed by a van towing a Kublewagon – had to pinch myself to make sure I hadn’t drifted off!

Dave,
That sounds a really tempting set up.

How far are you away from few to sell?
