glad you found that too, i thought it was just me!
Re: UK tank club forum
I think there was some mention on "the other site" that the guy who ran the website has moved countries, to luxemburg I think, and hasn't yet been connected to the interweb to re establish his site.
Re: UK tank club forum
Hi,
Ferd, who runs the site for the UKTC has recently moved. Unfortunately there has been a wait to have the ADSL line or whatever its called to be installed. It should have been done last week, but as far as I know Ferd is still waiting for it.
If they're anything like BT the site should be up and running again by August (with luck)

Re: UK tank club forum
i dont see why the site should go down because hes moved, unless he hosted the website at his own home ?
other than that it must just be that he missed a payment on the hosting or something.
cheers,
matt

He was hosting the site from his home - makes updating and fixing things easier if the server is right there in your broom cupboard or basement

Re: UK tank club forum
hardley
hosting from home is, in my opinion.. rather silly. costs more to set up, you dont get the technical support and you dont get cpanel and the like for free. (and this happens lol)
anyway, doesnt matter, it worked, kinda.
cheers,
matt

Re: UK tank club forum
The bottom line is that if I look at what the Detroit club pays in hosting fee's for its site and forum - $240/year - and the relatively small number of users we have, it would make perfect sense for one of us to host the website from a spare computer in our basement. Fred obviously has the ability to do this, so to suggest that hosting your own site is 'silly' kind of ignores the substantial cost saving that the club would gain if they were simply paying somebodies electric bill ($60/year, based on what I used to pay for powering 2 servers 24/7 when I used to host a web server and CS:S server on 2 separate machines)
If you have the necessary skills to set up the software and you have root access to the server (something you will never get with remote hosting), you don't need to pay for extras like cpanel (its expensive btw!) and you can instantly reboot or restore from tape in the event of an emergency. Fred is doing what makes sense for his situation, he is just getting screwed by the local telecom - for all the bad stuff that you hear about BT, they are far better than any other phone company I have ever encountered - Europe is a 6 week wait for your broadband to be connected, and the US is similar in my experience
