BREL's HL Tx throttle modification

Just done it.
Absolute result,one miles easier to control Tiger .
Wide turns,slow pivot turns,all so much easier to perform.
The dreaded sudden "super-spin"(don't think Tigers really did that)doesn't happen
unless you push the "steering"stick hard right or left when stationary.

I just need to get the 3to1 gearbox modification sorted(in a few weeks)and I reckon I'll have
a tank that has gone from good to highly driveable.

Mark I am glad you liked the modification for the HL TX, I came up with the Idea at about 2 am on the sunday night/ Monday morning at the dunstable meeting. Matt (septons brother) was the first in the club to do this mod to his TX for his Panzer 4 but did not swap the wire over.

if you have elmod I do not think this modification will work with elmod because you need the TX to be in its original configuration to control the elmod equipped tank

El Mod!!!

No El Mod gear in mine matey,just bog standard Hooflungdung down the chinese take away HL electrics .
I can't afford El Mod nowadays and even when I could,bits of my anatomy would have been in the take away's wok if I'd have tried to run that expense past "The Boss"(she's the financial controller)to spend on something that she considers a pointless toy .
I spied the modification in the Tips and Tricks section and yes,it was clear and easy to follow.

Just one thing though,it got me into trouble with the boss.
I'd done the conversion sitting at the kitchen table,leaving the tank upstairs in it's transport/storage case.
Off I went upstairs,Tx in hand(oo-er Mrs),got the tank out and powered up.
Luckily,all our upstairs has laminate floors because all the dried soil in the tank's tracks
came out all over the place whilst I was test driving .

Needless to say,she came upstairs and spotted the mess................. ,
yes,she made me clean it up too

I think I read somewhere that the Tiger was the only tank that could turn on the spot. It was Wittman who realised that he could select a target by rotating the tank as well as the turret, thus out maneuovering his opponents.

In the T34 v Tiger pc game, the T34 can only turn whilst moving forward, but the Tiger can do it whilst stationery.

I could be talking complete &*%!*'s of course....

I've just done this mod too, but of the two transmitters I own, it only worked with the older flat silver fronted type.

With the newer chrome fronted type, the throttle had forward only, which would only engage when pulling the stick back.

A great mod to do, makes a world of difference to driving the tank.

BTW can someone point me in the direction of the 3:1 gearbox mod?

The ability to turn on the spot was a product of the Henschel steering gear - I don't know about earlier tanks & their derivatives or the Elefant but this gear was on the T1 and T2. It was based on the British Merrit Brown system - I don't know much (anything) about British tanks so can't say whether ours used the system.

I know the KT could do it, so if they shared the same steering gear maybe the T1 could too? I had always assumed it could.

Yes, definitely T1 and T2 could turn on the spot (successfully). I don't think any earlier production German tanks of WW2 could & I don't know about British, American or Russian. I've read that the final drive in the Panther (not the same manufacturer or design as Tiger 1 or 2) was theoretically capable of turning on the spot but was actually so weak/ marginal a design this was probably practically impossible without wrecking the drive - it would be interesting to know what the drivers were trained to do - anyone ever seen the manuals? Maybe they were prepared to take the risk against (say) a Firefly but not other circumstances.

So if you are battling with a HL T1 you can legitimatey use the 'super spin' function to get a bead on the opposition, but if you have a Panther you should programme in a drive failure after 1 go per battle!
