Scratch built 1/8th scale T34/76

Post by Panzerman »

How about my early Christmas present, I didn't build it all scratch built by Dale Jordan
who lives on the east coast of Australia. It took him around three years to build and I feel
honored to be her owner. Mainly from fibre glass and alloy, the tracks are the only items
he didn't make. She is a static, keen to hear any ideas on how to get her mobile on the cheap,
thinking about a couple of cheap 12 volt drills with belt drive?

What a beast, built by a master modeler, what do you think?

Hi Panzerman First go for chain drive or metal gears .Belts are likly to slip if strain put on them.IF you keep the amps of the motors to around 10amps (they are rated at 20amps but wouldnt like to run them at this without cooling) you could use the tamiya KV1 dmd/mf units ,this would give you full R.C control with sounds check here for them http://stores.shop.ebay.co.uk/Jasons-St ... QQ_armrsZ1
For turret traverse you could fit a belt type drive to a motor or servo, which should be the easyest to make up ,for gun barrel elevation a servo would be simple to fit ,recoil of barrel could be done with a servo as well .Fit tamiya flash in the barrel ,you would also have the option of fitting I.R. battle system.

Hope this gives you something to think about.

nice looking tank, pity it is only static, but I am sure you will get it to run

Hi Folks, yep she is a fine bit of kit! I feel honoured that she is now mine.
Thanks for the tips, so please excuse my lack of understanding.

971wright could I use my full option Tamiya Pershing DMD with a couple of drills via
sprockets and chains powered by 7.2 volt batteries?

I thought some cordless drill units mounted to the base inside the tank would be ideal as
the chuck could mount the shaft with a sprocket on it then a chain to the drive sprocket.

I would imagine if you plug higher voltage into a Tamiya unit you fry it???!!!!
Same voltage but higher amps are okay though?

Thanks again,

Hi Tamiya DMD/Mf units will run at 12 volts ,its the amps that would kill them even running at 10 amps I would fit a fan to cool the DMD,Cordless drills would be O.K. if they are rated at about 10 amps and no more than 12volts,
as for using the pershing DMD/mf units these would be O.K. but I would have used the KV1as this tank had the same engine as the T34,

Hi Pete,

I am grateful for your tips, please excuse my lack of knowledge.

What you are saying is I could use a Tamiya DMD unit with a 12 volt battery and 12 volt drills
driving sprockets as long as the amps of the drills and battery are under 10.

I have a sealed lead battery which came with my 21st Century Stuart, on the side of the battery
it says 12volt, 6.5AH so this will not fry the DMD as long as the drills are also rated under 10amps?

Thanks mate,

Hi The battery should be o.k. to use should give a reasonable run time ,When you look at any electrical item it will tell you on the lable what voltage and what amps it uses sometimes its put down as miliamps 1,500 miliamps is 1,5 amps,so if the drills you are thinking of using are 6,5 amp this will give you a run time of about 30mins because there are 2 drills each using the same voltage/amps.
The battery you have give out 12 volts at a current of 6,5 amps for 1 hour if you wanted to fit a bigger battery as long as its 12volts say a 24amp/hour this would give you a run time of nearly 2 hours if you use 6,5amp motors because the motors are drawing power at a rate of 13amps per hour.I would fit a cooling fan just to make sure the DMD dosnt get to hot.
